Ubuntu is a bit of a pig to install on VPC, it's been discussed in this
group before.
You could start by looking here:

Thank you Jeff for providing an actual tip. I'll continue to research the
forums for answers.

I am simply trying to state that I was careful in following the process to
add a new Virtual Machine. There ARE instructions and documentation for how
to properly use VPC. Unless I am delusional.

Thanks Bo. I did scan the Forums b4 posting but did not find the exact hit.
Luckily looks like the last link you inidicate is an exact match to the error.
I've pretty much tried that process but not quite ... so I'll give this a
whirl and I think it may work. This is good info ... thanks again.

OK ... update. The procedure works. Only a word of caution that one of the
commands is wrong:
“sudu nano /boot/grub/menu.lst” <--- incorrect
“sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst” <--- correct
Ubuntu is working under VPC, a few things appear to need fixing but ... so
far so good. Thanks again.

Did you 'get' the desktop from the installation .iso/cd?
If so, how is your desktop display?
If so, how is your pointer working?
If so, did you adjust your color depth?
Did you install VM additions for Linux?
If so, did that fix anything?
What?
Thanks,
FACE

Hi FACE,
(a) Yes, I got to the desktop from the ISO image CD I created with Roxio 10.
(b) After I followed the installation instructions an booted from the HD,
my display was fine. I choose the option to "Allow any screen Resolution" on
the VPC settings. I did have issues with making it use the full screen. I'd
advise against doing that since it causes major display problems and you will
not be able to switch back to the HOST without invoking the Task Manager.
(c) The pointer works well inside Ubuntu, but in order to go to the HOST I
have to hold down the Right ALT key. Sometimes there is a bogus pointer
there but I can make it go away by hovering over it again.
(d) I did not adjust my color depth, so far everything looks good.
(e) I have not been able to install the VM additions yet because I have
not been able to get the Network to work. I am sure I'll find the answer
soon and I'll post here to let you know.

Good news on getting the network to work. All I had to do is click on the
Network Icon on the right side of the top bar. I selected "wired network
connection" and voila! I was connected.
Bad news on the VM Additions for Ubuntu (or any Linux) ... I did not have
success and searched the web for them. I also searched this Forum and
according to the Microsoft MVP's ... there is no Linux support. So I guess I
am stuck with not being able to resize my screen or have the same
capabilities as the other virtual Windows.
I guess I can understand that. I generate a lot of business for MS and I
have to support Windows and Linux for my customers. So it is important to me
to virtualize and operate multiple OS'. So hopefully MS will provide future
support. I think VPC 2007 is a great product ... and could compete with
VMware or others out there.

The above sounds like you did not find them at all.
Below is an excerpt from the rtf that comes in the msi:
MICROSOFT SOFTWARE LICENSE TERMS
MICROSOFT VIRTUAL MACHINE ADDITIONS FOR LINUX
These license terms are an agreement between Microsoft Corporation (or
based on where you live, one of its affiliates) and you. Please read
them. They apply to the software named above, which includes the media on
which you received it, if any. The terms also apply to any Microsoft

· Internet-based services, and

for this software, unless other terms accompany those items. If so, those
terms apply.
<much more...oh gawd, much, much, more.....
Did I read you right that you did not find them?
If so, this is what you are looking for:
VMAdditionsForLinux.msi 3074,560 .a.. 6-24-08 10:50:26
which will install on the host as several files, including an iso.
An HTML manifest/instructions is part of the package:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Instructions

These are for Virtual Server, not Virtual PC:
http://vpc.visualwin.com/ngfaq.aspx#4
As mentioned, no Linux distros are supported guests on Virtual PC, which is
not necessarily to say that they won't work on Virtual PC...
I had limited success in getting them to work on SuSE 10 and Ubuntu 7.10,
but they were such a fight that I gave up and now do all my Linux
virtualisation work on VMWare where several Linux distros are fully
supported, including the VMWare "equivalent" of the Additions...

Exactly. Much like numerous other OSes are not supported but run like a
champ under MS VPC 2007. (not ALL OSes.)
Agreed. VMWare seems much more suited to Linux though the OP was quite
specific as to need/desire.
