SP3 pre-installation step

On Wed, 3 Sep 2008 23:27:51 -0500, "Jo-Anne" <...@tbcnet.com

I'm about to install SP3 on my new notebook computer running Windows XP SP2.
I've read everything I can about what to do before installing it, and I
think I'm ready to go, except for this: One of the pre-installation steps is
to log on as administrator. I'm the sole user and administrator, and for now
at least the computer boots without my having to log on at all. Does that
mean I'm already logged on as administrator? If not, what do I need to do to
log on as administrator?

Thank you!

Jo-Anne

I was wondering the same thing myself.
(WinXP Home)
I don't, and have never used "Administrator" or "logged on/off", why
should I have to, just to install SP3 ?

In some case it is necessary (requested) to login Windows as Administrator.
This is one of that cases.

Sorry, Robear! The notebook is WinXP Pro; the desktop is WinXP Home.

If it WinXP Home, don't worry about it.

But the notebook is XP Pro, and that's the computer that needs SP3. So...do
I definitely need to log on as administrator?

Thank you!

Sorry, I had the wrong end of the stick.

Are you going to install WinXP SP3 manually or via Windows/Automatic Update?
If the latter, it shouldn't matter.

On Thu, 4 Sep 2008 20:36:33 -0500, "Jo-Anne" <...@tbcnet.com

I hadn't thought of doing it through Automatic Update; but if you think that
would work OK, I'll do it. I've had the update notification shield since
last night, when my friend connected the wireless router. The new computer
has IE6 on it, and I'm assuming I'll lose the ability to revert to it by
installing SP3 with IE7 (not that it's really a loss; I much prefer IE7
despite its quirks).

I bought another copy of Acronis True Image for the new computer, so I can
back up all my little configuration changes before starting the
installation. I think that's all I have left to do.

Thanks again, Robear!

(ignore any references to Vista)

And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Alternately, use this Direct Download link:

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
installing IE7 and install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

Thank you, Robear! Ive been doing the reading, and I hope I understand what
I need to do. I do have a few questions, though. Heres what I think is
going on.

First, since IE6 is on my new computer, SP3 will simply update it and wont
try to install IE7. It should therefore be safe to use Automatic Update to
download and install SP3 (after I disable my antivirus program but leave the
Windows firewall on).

Second, Ill follow Sandis IE7 pre-installation procedure when the time
comes to install IE7 (set a restore point, turn off AU, disable antivirus
program, keep Windows firewall on, shut down all other programs).

Third, Ill probably use the second of the two download pages you posted,
since its for IE7 with SP2 or SP3, whereas the GetItNow download seems to
be a version just for SP2. (It looks like youd have to skip the download
button and, farther down the page, choose SP2/SP3 and then click Go.)

Fourth, once IE7 is installed, Ill get all the critical updates for it,
including Root Certificates, even if theyre shown as optional.

QUESTIONS:

1. Should I install SP3 by itself (no other updates) and then later install
all the other critical updates?

2. Should I install all available critical updates before installing IE7?

3. You said to save the IE7 installer to my desktop but not to run it. If I
click "Download," will saving the installer to my desktop be an option
offered?

4. Did you mean that once Ive saved the installer to my desktop, I should
go ahead and run it from there? (Just checking cause Im nervous.)

Thank you again, Robear!

A1. Yes. Install SP3 and reboot twice.

A2. Yes.

A3. Yes, or you can right-click on the link and select SAVE AS.

A4. Yes, double-click on the save file to install IE7.

NB: You must be online to install IE7!

A5. YW

And thank you again! I'll get at all this as soon as I solve a problem with
my new router, so I can make sure I stay connected to the internet while
downloading everything.
