Ghost upset PC !

Stayed up most of the night, installing Aunties XP Home SP2 OEM PC, and all
went swimmingly.
...and I was impressed, particularly with hardware, in that after everything
I installed and changed and tweaked, and after every reboot - within two to
three seconds of XP Homes' classic theme blue screen "WELCOME" ....WALLOP !
...desktop and icons were there in a flash. After all this work I decided
to Norton Ghost 9 | full backup C:\ onto 2nd hd D:\ ...ready for when
Auntie gets her hands on it, (just kidding - she's very good on a PC).
Knowing that a PC is bever quite the same after Nortons' been in there - I
diligintly made a Restore Point and labelled it "Before installing Ghost"
, ...then installed Ghost | backed C:\ into a folder on d:\
....uninstalled Ghost | and "Restored my PC to an earlier time" i.e. the
above mentioned Restore Point !! Ist boot after choosing a restore point
is a bit long-winded of course, but, the next reboot, and then after the 3rd
and fourth reboots, ... Did I get that lovely fast startup time back ?
Did the Desktop ever appear just two to three seconds after XP's "WELCOME"
screen, ever again ? ? ? ?
No, it f*****g well did not, ...we are now talking 40 seconds, and then a
blue rectangle appears for several seconds on the left side of the taskbar,
and then in a few seconds more the desktop icons appear, and then across the
next 20 seconds or so the system tray fills up with its' 9 icons !!
Any ideas and tips as to what Symantec Norton Ghost 9.0 did to this system,
that survived Ghost being uninstalled and system restored to above mentioned
restore point prior to installing it - would be gratefully received.

Since you have a ghost copy, have you tried restoring from the ghost?
When I've used Ghost, I didn't need to install the software - I just booted it from a floppy. Maybe
you can boot it from a CD in the newer versions of Ghost.

Ahah ! ...that's maybe not such a bad idea, ...though I've done a fair bit
more to it since.
....maybe too much to try it but, thanks that was a good one - i.e. addled
brain at this end didn't even think of that !

Since this appears to be mainly a Ghost rather than a Windows issue, the
Ghost FAQs or a Ghost newsgroup might point you in the right direction.

uuuuh ? but, it made XP go slow, so now it's a Windows problem ! (just
kidding :-),
...it just occurred to me, I should have tried to try running the Norton
Cleanup utilities - though in theory they may have nothing to do but, you
never know, ...I've got a stash of them somewhere !
...and it crossed my mind that Ghost may not like it that, when I install
it, I immediately stop the Norton Ghost service running and set it to manual
| remove the reg. key that plants a Ghost icon in system tray, ...mmm maybe
reg. key scheduling - -can't remember now | and I delete the Liveupdate
directory.
e.g. on my own machine, if I want to Ghost a drive, I either start the
service myself, or start the program two times in a row to bring it to life.

Last weekend I hitched a 2-ton trailer to my VW and it made it go really,
