Sea Salt/Kosher Salt - BC Aquaria -British Columbia Aquarium Forum
Ok so I went to save on foods to get salt and I found 2 kind of salt that has no iodide in them sea salt and kosher salt.
The only thing I was confused about is whatz the difference...?
Are both of them safe to use in my tank?
Have no idea about the sea salt, I would just stick with the kosher salt
Oh one more thing..what is the ratio for teaspoon of salt/gallon
SO Kosher salt is safe for aquariums?
I can use it to treat ich and just normal everyday water change add ons?
Add salt and turn your temp to 81F the ich will clear off =)
I do, dont know how to measure it, i use a digital pinpoint salinity monitor for my cichlid tank and my nano tank.
So i just keep adding salt till the number is the same before i started.
Sorry, cant help you much.

I won't kill my fish if there is tad too much salt right?
It might not be too good for them.
The key thing is to have gradual change and not just dump a whole bunch in at once
So like a pinch everyday?
Like a pinch of salt for 7 days till water change than a pinch a day till water change...etc...?
Depending on the fish, they can be pretty tolerant of salt.
I just bought some pickling salt from safeway and it was great.
It said no additives.
Make sure theres no caking agents.
when i was treating my piranha for ich, i raised the temp to 86 and used 1tsp of salt/gallon for 3 consecative days.
it was a 30 gallon tank so in total, at the end of 3 days, i added 90tsp of salt.
The sea salt packaging reads "As this is a natural additive-free salt, caking may occur over time.
Please shake containter before use.
Beacue this product does not contain iodide, its best used for pickling." so I don't know if sea salt is pickling salt like the kind from safeway or if its any different from kosher salt so I bought both...

I was also reading up on something called Epsom salt not sure how it is but its also aquarium safe used for riftzone fish like malawis and tangs to raise ph or something
Thanks All I dont have ick right now but a good boy scout is always prepared.
As for how much salt i add 1 teaspoon for every 5 gallons of water for my African Cichlids and works great.

Quote: : I was also reading up on something called Epsom salt not sure how it is but its also aquarium safe used for riftzone fish like malawis and tangs to raise ph or something I think they use Epsom salt tablets to soften hard water.
ie:Alberta.
It's also great for sore muscles.

Actually it's the other way around epsom salts are used to raise the hardness of our soft water

Epsom salts is entirely different from Sea Salt/Kosher Salt or even table salt.
Epsom salts is magnesium sulphate, it raises tds/GH of our oh so lovely soft water and can be used to treat bloat.
The other salts are sodium chloride...it has no effect on GH, this can be used to treat ich.

Sea Salt, Kosher Salt and Pickling Salt are all fine as long as they have no additives.
Just check the package for additives, then buy the cheapest.
Kosher Salt has larger grains so it might take a bit longer to dissolve.

I grind all those kosher salt to fine dust XD good now I can put the sea salt to use =P
Are the dosages the same?
Like if it's 5ml per gallon for aquarium salt- would it be the same for all the salts or different?
Like i said earlier i dont know if ths applies to tropicals but in all my african tanks is use 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons of water.
Hope that helps.
