How do I give up? - Christian Forums
Hi all,
I've read some posts (e.g.
The Addiction one) where I see advice given along the lines of "just give up and let God" or "let go and let God".
This sounds great and as I read Romans and Galations I see that's the case....it's either law or grace.
However from a really rubber-hits-the-road perspective how exactly do I "Give up and let God?"
Thanks in advance

Nothing better than these glib christian phrases which are usually not thought through as to how they work in practice....
No wonder people get frustrated.

Usually it comes to brokenness.
When there's no other resort - we've done all we can do, we've hit rock bottom and the only way left to look is up.
Then, we "give it up to God".
It's a matter of trusting Him.
Letting go of things, problems, is not something we are used to doing.
We are trained by peers and society to "deal with it ourselves".
That's not the way of a Christian...
It's not how it was designed.
Holy Spirit is the Comforter, the Helper.
It's a foreign concept for us to give our cares and worries and fights up to another.
It makes us less of a man...
Weak. What would the world call a broken person - one who's at the bottom with nowhere to go?
Poor guy? So sad?
How horrible for him?
God calls that broken person "good soil".
Soil ready for His word, so that it can be planted, and grow and bloom!
The biggest battle of "letting go" is the one in our heads.
Most of our problems with giving things to God is in our head.
You must decide that you no longer want to deal with whatever it is.
Then decide to let God deal with it, and try your best to forget about it - repent from it...
Do a 180 and walk away from it.
Forgiveness means God's not holding it against you, so you are FREE from it!
God wants so much to take care of us but we won't let Him.
After that conscious decision you must then pray and find scripture of hope and help for your situation.
Pray and THANK GOD for TAKING IT - don't continually ask Him to relieve you of it.
You ask, He starts.
That's the prayer of Faith.
Thanking God for doing it strengthens your faith and your spirit, and after you prayed it enough your mind will start to accept it.
This may not have helped, but I pray is some strange way it does.
Don't be frustrated, or angry, or upset.
When you are, it's harder to hear the Voice of reason: God's.
edit** The more you do this, the sooner you can do this, and not have to take it to the point of brokenness.
God's so good!!

I found an article by Andrew Murray 'Absolute Surrender' very helpful in this.
I think it's available on line...
I'll see if I can find a link.

This is terrible, but sometimes there's nothing better for a person than to realize they are an utter failure and cannot acomplish anything and that life is meaningless without God.
I think that's part of letting go (at least it was in my case).
I had to realize God was the only one who could do really.

How do you give up...you realize you can't do it on your own.
You trust that all things work together for good for them who love the Lord who are the called according to His purposes.
I remember sitting in church when I was a kid and hearing a super legalistic sermon one time that said...if I were watching a R rated movie and thinking lustful thoughts and Jesus came back that I would miss the rapture.
I balled crying, thinking of just how many unGodly thoughts I had in a day (lustful or otherwise)...then I suddenly realized the truth of the matter and I stopped crying and was full of joy.
The truth is we can't make it on our own and that we should not depend on our abilities to live righteously to make us right with God, because it doesn't.
Jesus alone is our righteousness and His righteousness is the only righteousness God will accept.
We are clothed in His righteousness not our own.
Below I have pasted a section from cloventonguesoffire.com that I wrote to answer the question...how do I receive salvation?
Intead of giving a canned answer or copying from someone else I just wrote what salvation means to me.
To me this goes hand in hand with what you are asking.
How do I receive Salvation?
Acknowledge that you are a sinner, unworthy of God’s love and acceptance and unable to reconcile yourself to God on your own behalf.
Ask God to save you.
Receive the free gift of salvation that God has offered to all mankind by believing that God, out of love, made a way for mankind to be reconciled to Him by becoming a man, living a perfect life, taking the punishment that we deserve upon himself, defeating sin (that which separates us from God) by dying on the cross and rising again from the grave after three days defeating death all on our behalf.
Trust completely in the love of God expressed to all mankind through the finished work of Jesus

Yeah... I was going to mention that you cannot "do" this either...
Any more than you can willfully have a nervous breakdown

Here are some examples:
1.
You lost your keys, and have the impulse to hit yourself for losing them.
But hitting doesn't get them found.
God knows where all your stuff is, so you ask Him.
2.
You haven't been able to figure out how to get a job, and have filled out hundreds of applications.
The harder you work, the more time you waste and the more despairing you become.
Eventually you feel uncapable of carrying out a job you once knew you could do.
This is a time where you let go, and ask God to make the connections.
Things will come to mind that you'd never thought of, a friend will call and let you know about an article they've read on opportunities, you will remember that you'd forgotten to put your name at the top of your resume, and suddenly things begin to knit back together.
Letting God fix things is hard when we feel it's our responsibility, and are hard on ourselves for not getting everything done.
But ultimately, it's Him we want to impress, and He is offering help...
So we need to let the two concepts work together, His approval and His assistance.
