Why do you believe what you believe? - Christian Forums

Just sum it up..atheist, christian or whatever.. why is what you believe right and others who believe differently wrong?

I recently became an atheist so I haven't formulated what I actually do believe in.

Love one another is a general principle that is worth holding onto.

Why? Because our genetics require us to preserve the species and punish individuals that don't do what preserves the species. I am not sure others are wrong.

I am reasonably sure that their surety is misbegotten.

It's rather complicated as to how I reached that position;

So, I'll let it go for now.

Since I do not think that we choose beliefs, it must be the case that I believe X because I am convinced that X.

I do not know if I can be more specific than that.

My beliefs are the result of my experiences and continuing pursuit of knowledge about the world I live in.

I've seen what religion does to people and I don't particularly care for it.

I don't see other peoples' beliefs as necassarily wrong.

Misguided and irrational perhaps, but not wrong.

Likewise, I can't say for certain that my beliefs and ideology are correct.

They just work for me better than any alternatives I've explored.

Are you asking about beliefs in general, or about religious beliefs (or the lack thereof, in my case) specifically? Whatever - in any case the answer would be: because I can´t help it. why is what you believe right and others who believe differently wrong?

I´m not even convinced that what I believe is necessarily right and what others believe is necessarily wrong.

Who can say why one believes as one believes?

It must be a very complicated path, and one whose steps are often hidden to the traveler. I don't believe that I am certainly right, and I am certain that not all others are wrong, though of course I strive to be in the right when I can.

Because I have the Manual that tells me what's right and what's wrong.

It is my Standard for faith and practice.

Because of the Law of Non-contradiction.

I don't believe anything related to religion.

Have seen no reason to believe anything related to religion.

All I hear is claims.

Claims by contemporary men based on claims by ancient men.

The idea that religions are human inventions is a far better explanation, with greater predictive power, fewer additive assumptions, and greater tolerance to close scrutiny, than that they are the culminations of divine revelation.

Yeah, but why do you believe that?
