Food glorious food! (Or was it not so glorious?) - Christian Forums
Who remembers school dinners?
What was really good, rib-sticking grub?
What was so dire you can't believe it was fit for human consumption?
Or did you take your own little pack-up and all swap a sandwich for an apple?
I remember the lovely PINK custard, (pudding for USA?), that we had with shortbread biscuits.
What a weird combination!
They'd never get that past the health-conscious inspectors nowadays would they?
And green minty custard with the chocolate sponge!
Mashed potatoes with grey lumps in and nasty gravy were bad, but maybe mashed swede was worse?
Share your childhood food moments, good or bad!
Blessings, love Sue

I actually loved the yeast rolls we had at the school...ooh...yeast!
(sorry Sue! )
I used to love honey buns.
I would heat them up in the oven and they'd be all hot and sticky!
Mmm mmm!
And Swanson chicken pot pies!

(sorry Sue! ) Yeah, that yeast thread got a bit diverted!
LOL!

What?! there really is a food item called a honey bun?!
That's a term of endearment in parts of Britain, and I never actually heard of a real, edible one!
Sounds nice though.
I have NO idea what a Swanson chicken pot pie is.
God bless, love Sue

Gypsy Tart
Chocolate pudding and chocolate sauce
Lemon merangue pie
Ginger pudding and orange sauce.
The puddings were the best.
I took a packed lunch in secondary school.

For a couple years of grade school, I lived in northern England and went to a convent school oh my, not the best memories
There was this bologna-type meat they sliced about 3/4 inch thick and fried it and it had big blobs of fat in it.
YYYUUUCCC . And they served everything with canned, way-over-cooked mushy green peas.
Then, we moved to Italy and that school had the best, delicioso food on earth!

My favorite school lunch was pizza day on Fridays.

My mom used to feed us that all the time.
I got so sick of it that when I got married, I made sure we'd never buy that again.
It's 23 years later and I still refuse to eat one.

What I remember is spagetti sandwiches.
On days we had spagetti they would also have this thick cut homemade bread.
We would ask for 2 full slices and usually get it.
We would then take the spagetti and make a sandwich with it.
Just mound the spagetti between the two slices of bread and slather butter on it.
Great stuff.

Wow, at last, another person besides myself that eats spaghetti sandwiches!
I love them but my husband makes fun of me whenever I eat them.
As far as school lunch memories, I was such a scared and nervous little kid in elementary school that the sweet smell of the chocolate milk would make me feel sick, so I had to stick to plain milk while every other kid loved the chocolate.

We didn't get chocolate milk in our elementary school till around 1969.
Prior to that, the kids that brought lunch were told they were not ALLOWED to bring chocolate milk in their thermoses because it wasn't fair to the school lunch kids who had to drink plain milk!
I always wondered, why then, was it 'fair' for them to bring Kool-aid?

While the food wasn't as good as mom made , it was edible .
And , given that practically everyone ate at least most of their food most of the time , the overall take was greatly exagerated .
I wrote a paper on that in my freshman college "english" class .
People were going back for seconds and thirds - complaining about the very items the whole time .
