the enforcer situation - Calgarypuck Forums - The Unofficial Calgary Flames Fan Community

The Western Conference has a group of heavyweights: Shelley, Hordichuk, Parros, etc. Even if Vandermeer is brought back, it's not his job to mix with the big boys. Does Sutter get back to ringing Georges Laraque's agent?

Oliwa. Is he still playing?

Quote: : Oliwa. Is he still playing?

Nope, and he was arrested last year in Poland for beating the crap out of his girlfriend.

So no thanks...

Glencross, Vandermeer, Iginla, Phaneuf...we got enough guys who can drop the gloves.

I was wondering about Laraque as well.

He was close to coming here there a couple of years ago, and he is a guy that can take a regular shift and not be as big a liability as Goddard was at times. Just depends on the price I suppose.

Prust, Nystrom, Regehr, Sarich, Primeau...

I think most of the team would drop the gloves.

Best brawl team in the NHL?

It is well established that I love goons, but I'm wondering if a combination of Nystrom/Prust/Vandermeer is enough.

Usually not a good tradeoff.

Bad news when your star players are forced to drop the gloves.

Plus, Phaneuf isn't exactly great at sparring.

I think the Flames need one big body even if the guy only plays 10 games.

Best case scenario is a goon on his first contract that can be shuffled down to QC when not needed.

I love Nystroms willingness to drop the gloves, but it'll only take one time where he bites off more than he can chew... My wish list is Laraque...

But it seems like our lines are filling up with younger players.

We need big Andreas Lilja on our team to play security guard...I mean, Peter Worrell...

The price for these enforcers has gone stupid Godard 3yrs $2,25M Fedoruk 3yrs $3.175M Shelley 2yrs $1.45M Hordichuk 3yrs $2.25M

Laraque would be a welcome addition...

Of course, money talks.

Phoenix is really loading up on enforcers... McGrattan, Fedoruk and RFA Carcillo.

Wow!

I would salivate if we got Carcillo somehow....Forget Avery if Danny C could be had!

Agreed...guy can score too.

Fedoruk can actually play some as well so he is in line too at a million per. As for team toughness...thats all well and good, but there should be no one on the Flames taking on Boogard/Hordichuk/etc one on one.

Its a suicide mission.

Godard was very good at his job and hopefully Sutter can find someone to replace him...Laraque would be great but even more expensive than Fedoruk IMO.

After the initial signing period, the remaining toughguys can't allow themselves to get too greedy.

Although it might look like the market was set by some those contracts, there's only a limited number of teams looking and not everybody is going to get into a huge bidding war for a very limited (but clearly-defined) role.

Yes, Laraque can add a little more than just fighting, but it was getting ridiculour when some of the enforcers started believing that they were more than that.

Sandy McCarthy started demanding PP time.

IMO, an enforcer is not needed.

Not unless the guy is an actual legit 3rd line player.

TImes have changed. Rather have team toughness...Iginla, Phaneuf, Vandermeer, Regehr, Sarich, Primeau, Nystrom, Prust, Glencross.

There will come a time this year, perhaps many times, when our top players will have to fight someone they shouldn't.

Iginla Regehr Phanuef will all end up fighting guys well below thier relative skill level.

People can say fighting has no place in the game, we don't need a heavyweight;

But there will come times this year we may wish we had the big guy n the bench. Regehr can hold his own with a Parros, as can Vandermeer.

I just hope he doesn't end up paired with a Boogaard or Iginla or Phanuef with a Stortini or Hordichuk. I am all for the team toughness, but am very glad Vandermeer is around.

I wish Godard could have taken a more regular shift, then he'd likely still be here. At least the Oilers have no toughness...yet.

But Colorado and Vancouver have plenty.

Minnesota also got Weller yesterday. re above post: Primeau is not a fighter, big yes but a fighter no.
