American v. an American - WordReference Forums

Which one would you say to answer this question--What is your nationality--I am American or I am an American? To me, "I am American" sounds better but don't know why.

When do you use "I am American" and "I am an American."? Thanks a lot for your help.

I always learn a lot from you guys.

I have answered both ways and still have not landed in jail.

"I'm American," is the preferable response if I'm thinking.

I think that if discussing someone's nationality, you would not need 'an' - eg.

I am American/He is American etc. If one is discussing a particular person of this nationality, they are referred to as an American

In 'real life' the conversation would probably go: ~What's your nationality? ~American. But I suppose you know this.

American can be an adjective or a noun. So both sentences are possible. It doesn't work with every nationality. I am English [adjective] I am an Englishman [noun] She is Scottish.

She is a Scot. She is Danish.

She is a Dane. and many more.
