Hobby??? What do I need a hobby for? - 2CPU.com Discussion Forums

I live in bangkok.

Well after you eat, sleep, breath, dream computers at work and at home...you find out you need something else.

RC's! for beginners

I like looking for things that scare me on the internet.

Then, afetr I recover, I look for something even scarier.

It's a game.

Yup R/Cs was one hobby I picked up, it got me out of the house and away from computers (well until I needed to order more parts ).

You need hobby for joy and make your life more interesting.

I can't afford hobbies, since everything I touch I have to change or modify to make it better.

It sucks and is a never ending cycle, hell you could almost call it OCD.

Oh well it keeps my brain busy.

I decided to try digital photgraphy, which gets me out of the house, and also gives my "workstation" an official reason to exist (all while keeping the "new toys" aspect in the picture).

Have you considered Buddism?

I hear that's popular in your part of the world, zedhex.

When I truly think about it I can't think of a single hobby.

Like I said, I can't leave anyhting alone, so I would place everything I do as a hobby.

There isn't anything I touch I don't try to tweak.

How about a sport?

There are plenty which are only mildly "gear" driven...

Swimming, ultimate frisbee, lacross, football/soccer, rugby, jogging/running, dancing. Pick up a musical instrument (more expensive, but good for the soul). Learn a new language or two. Collect scraps of paper. Write a book or poem, or begin reading a different set of genres. Draw. I like the buddhism idea, that would be a fun hobby, or even way of life.

Lacrosse mildly gear driven? maybe for bagat, but not for really playing it.

(girls lax OTOH, has a bit less gear...) and I will assume you meant touch football.

Or, you might enjoy a pleasant afternoon with an ak in the calibre of your choice.

Way to many add ons and modifications to "upgrade" with.

I love it when an upgraded stock cost more than the gun.

Unlike photography, where you have lenses and systems and cameras and zooms and films and software and etc etc etc.

Other sports like racing cars can be very expnsive, or something as past time such as golf or whatever. That's why I like swimming so much - all you need is a simple $30 pair of jammers and a few buckets of water Surfing is cool, too, but boards can become expensive, especially with the price of the specialty foam now.

But they last many years!

Jano, I see what you meant now - comparing it to other hobbies not really other sports (I track my car and that isn't a sport at the enthusiast level) in my ~7 years really playing lacrosse, I went through probably 20+ stick heads and 4 shafts. couple pairs of gloves, 3 helmets couple of these couple of those...etc. which is nothing compared to what I dropped on a new motor/turbos/n stuff for my car... cars are very expensive hobby, I agree. a boss of mine is into guitars he has a lot of them now, but I think his obsession may be worse than mine for car parts.

And just last week, I had my exhaust replaced with something that gives the car better mileage, more hp, and makes it no longer sound like an old man's car, and that WASN'T CHEAP.

Surf wax is. Fortunately, the only other thing I can do to mine at the moment is to replace the supercharger, but that would void the warranty which has been good to me.

So.. I'm safe for now What kind of stuff have you done to your car? I also picked up classical guitar several years ago, and somehow, I've managed to stay with my one instrument.

The sound.. the craftsmanship, One of the reasons I'm staying away from the electrical guitars is that I know I'd get obsessed there with the wires, amps, strings, and even the guitars. Jano

Check to see if you can replace the charger pullies w/out voiding the warranty.

What kind of car is that?!

Do you notice many reduced performance issues because you're in Colorado (high altitude?)?? With the stock exhaust, I dyno'd at 323 rear wheel hp.

I'm giving the ecm about a month or two to tweak itself for the new system, then see where I end up, estimating about 345-350. Swapping the pulleys does void the warranty, and actually reduces the overall HP of the car (there are a few guys that have already done it on this car without success).

I have only 50k miles to go or until 2011, so not too bad.

The guy that designed the exhaust pipes for the car is working on redesigning the throttle body, air intake, and supercharger all at once.

It's a pretty cool setup, and the prototypes are having excellent results (about 455 rwhp without the improved throttle body), BUT, they are having traction control issues real world.

You step on the gas and the wheels and tail spin out, hahaha.

If you could see the current, stock design in the car, you'd see nothing but inefficiencies (bends and twists and wtf is that all over..).

The redesigned air intake alone adds about 25hp when combined with the new exhaust, according to prelim tests.

See -- another benefit to hobbies is that you end up having some things in common with total strangers (dvlhntr + me have common interest in cars), and in some cases can eventually make new friends.

Swimming, surfing, photography, cars, guitar, language classes at the local community college, even going to the gym have introduced me to new people over the last few years, and given me new challenges, things and places to explore, and overall enriched my life experiences.

Not to mention introduction to the strange new species of "female".

300zx Twin Turbo, preformance issues from living a mile high... IIRC Naturally Aspirated cars can lose about 12-15% of their peak power, forced induction cars lose like 5-8% (don't Quote: me on these numbers, this is from a shakey memory and I could be wa off.).

I have taken my car up into the mountains a few times and the power loss can be quite noticeable when I get above what I estimate is 7,000 feet.

Turbos spooled a bit later didn't have quite the same punch when they are spooling. I ran pig rich on the reprom till it got adjsted for mile high+ driving.

(the base map I had is known to be a little rich as it is, running at a mile high just made that a little more noticeable) 91 is the best pump you will get in colorado.

(shy of a very few places with 110 on tap) bummer about the pullies making it worse...

I figured there would still be a little headroom there to tinker w/....

(I don't know a thing about jags) I am curious why they are having so much trouble getting the car to hook up - if they want it to actually hook up....

And seriously if I didn't have a way to help me forget about work and other stuff for a few hours every now and again I would go insane.

Yes, there's a tool to remove those shaft bolts (I'm not sure what they are called, but they have threading and no head), but it wasn't handy at the time.

With a bit of elbow grease we got them loose and replaced them with standard bolts when attaching the first piece to the catalytic converter, piece of cake. Are you referring to traction with the comment "trouble to hook up" ??

If so, I don't know the answer, as I'm still in the early stages of learning all about these things...

But I assume it has something to do with a computer that doesn't handle the increased power very well.

And the big tires may just be for show - yes, the car is fast, handles nicely, takes turns on a dime at 60+ mph, but it is NOT a sports car, it's a "grande touring", designed for long, fun trips (and I've done those, most comfortable car I've driven).

I haven't seen the results in person, but am told you have to be very careful with the foot, else the thing starts skidding all over.

Maybe it's weight distribution related *shrug* All those things you had done to your car - were you directly involved with those, or are they "kit" related and you just piece it together?

I didn't purchase a "kit" that had all these parts, I was using it in the above to refer to not listing exactly what in your car on the internet - seeing as my car is pretty distinguishable for someone who know what they are looking for.

And I get hasseled by the police while driving often enough as it is. I wanted a car I could still "street" and be comfortable in.

I didn't want to sacrifice everything in the name of pure preformance. basically I had a stuck valve and a floating valve on my old heads and the stock turbos had started to leak and I figured if it was coming apart that far I might as well get built motor in it....

(not really the best choice for the ol wallet, but I was going to have to pull the motor...

Seemed like as good a time as any....

Of course now the motor is comming out again, but that is becuase I didn't plan ahead as much as I should have.

) since the 1990-1996 Z has been around for a while, I wasn't exactly blazing new territory.

I knew what other people had built , problems they had run into, and what they got from it.

I think tried to pick the parts that I thought would fit what I wanted from the car. what I wanted was a car that could drive to and from work as often as I choose, could surprise people if I wanted it too, and on the rare occasion I might find my self at the track day at the local road course I wanted to be a able to find out just how much more car it is than I am driver. I had from plenty of help, both via TT.net and a well respected member of TT.net who happens to be reasonably close to me, so I wasn't ever worried I was getting the wrong stuff, just worried it would come togeather without issue.

I knew that if I got stuck on a "how do I " I was going to get trustworthy advice...
