D700--will new 50D slow migration from C. to N. ? : Nikon D3 - D1 / D700 Forum: Digital Photography Review
Price range is not at all similiar...larger /smaller sensors...yet, for a while now, many C.
Users have been envious of the D700 which seems like a very good unit, even though the price is up there.
Now that C.
Users have a low-cost option of higher res and quite possibly higher iso's as well (at sRaw 1 and 2 )...looks like the envy/migration will stop.
Just an observation of how things tend to flow.

You should post this in the D80-D40 forum as that is what the C 50D as you put it is on par with.
Haven't you been scewed around enough by C's incremental policy.
Compare the 50D to a D700 or a D300 you are kidding.
Go back to the C forum and I can say that with authority since I was once a C owner who got fed up with the 40D intro vis a vis the D300.
Soon to be proud owner of a D700 along side my D300.

Sure
1- When it has a Full Frame
2- If it doesn't have the Focus system from the 1DMKIII
3- If it takes Nikon Glass
What am I missing??
Look, these are two different cameras for two different target audiences!!
BTW, the massive Canon to Nikon switch is in the Pro sector, not he Amateur or Pro-Am Sector, when the 50D is geared to.
Some Pros might be buying the 50D, but not as a Primary camera.

I may dump all my Canon stuff because of that and get a D300.
I need a crop camera with reasonable AF for my 500/4L, and Canon is just not delivering.
I already have a D700 for wide to medium telephoto.

Jon,
you have a very nice gallery on your website.
I see you've also visited Cuba...
I've been there in July for the second time but haven't post-processed all the images yet.
As for the Canon 50D I find it interesting to see in which direction sensor development might head.
15MP on APS-C is possible but that's where photography goes down the drain: Lenses get sharp at f/4-5.6 with this kind of sensor resolution and images will be very soft at f/11 already due to diffraction.
This leaves the user with f/8.
Where is creativity?
You can glue the aperture ring to that value.
Unfortunately there will be buyers for such a camera.
Best wishes,
Markus

It's pretty hard to compare the 40D/50D with Nikon's D300 line now.
Since the D200, that Canon line has slid down the ranks to the D80/90 range.
Even sadder is that now that the D90 looks to have video and GPS support built in, it may end up being more full featured than the 50D.
It's really sad. My first two DSLR were 10D/20D, for which Nikon could not compete against.
Since the 30D, that line has become the joke of the DSLR world and emblematic of Canon's holding back the goods on the customers.
The 10D/20D provided the volume that built the Canon empire, and they've since soiled and cheapened it.
The move to 16mp in a DX body is a sign of desparation.

Desparate...
..incredable, even a consumer camera like this will do a lot of heart beating by some canon people, they are really desparate...
:-)
and still the question remains, will it focus?
:-)
Have a great day (and don't forget to drink your milk)

After i saw the 50D's spec leaked last night, i went back to futureshop to refund my 40D.
The 50D's spec just are not promising at all, and still only 9 AF??!?!?!
WHAT?
yeah, i have decided to get the D300 and most likely the D700 afterwards.

Don't really like the idea of ever increasing Mp in crop body possibly sacrificing Image quality.
Wished Canon would really revamp that range of camera doesn't seem to have really moved on since the great 20d (great camera) - I was hoping they would only got to 12mp, improved the Af system and a new body
Good things though: 920k 3" Lcd, HDMI Port, sRaw (useful in some circumstances) and be good if it has the excellent 30d,40d battery life.

Congrats on soon to getting the D300, 50d specs do seem just the same small upgrade as Canon did with the 20d ->
30d nothing really 2 get really excited about, small body style as 40d, same AF as 40d but good it has more weather sealing, etc.

True. I bought the 20D and a great camera it is.
As you said what came out after was a joke.
Canon had the technology to put out a camera like the D300 but did not.
They threw out a bone alla 40D.
Yet the Canon boy's kept buying till they woke up and then jumped ship to Nikon.
Does the Canon 40D take a nice picture?
Yes, but it is a boring camera to operate.
There is no room to challenge the photographer to experiment with settings the way you can with the D300 and now the FX line, D3/D700.

Hi megs and diffraction.
I think I'l have to wait to see some tests by DPR to see how that turns out.
Obviously a larger sensor and more $$ = better cam and better IQ.
Do you know how much iso difference there is between the D700 and the D300?
Thing is, if I don't have to spend the bigger bucks for a larger sensor...nice.
Do want resolution and higher isos.
Thanks.

The 50D sounds like it might have similar noise to the D300 with better resolution.
But not much better and I REALLY doubt the camera overall will be anywhere close to the body the D300 is.
D700 is in another league entirely.

Not obviously or you wouldn't have suggested the comparison.
;)

D300?
It's pretty big difference.
But I won't be surprised if the 50D has better image quality than the D300.
Similar or even lower noise and a bit more resolution.
Yes you'll be diffusion limited sooner, but that limit would just limit you to what a lower res sensor would and only when stopped down.
At mid range apertures the higher res sensor will win out.
If noise is kept at bay I'll take as many pixels as you'll give me.

Thanks.
It'll be very interesting to see if the higher ISO settings on that 15MP cropped sensor are usable.
Is 12800 there to make good images or sell cameras as a marketing point?

Nice work!
I really need to do some work on a online gallery.

"Do you know how much iso difference there is between the D700 and the D300?"
I've given an answer to this here:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1039&message=29004089
But I wouldn't be surprised if Canon's 50D is better than the D300 at high iso.
Best wishes,
Markus
