30d and 17-55 2.8 calibration question: Canon EOS 50D - 10D Forum: Digital Photography Review
I have the 30d and the 28-135 and the 17-55 2.8.
The camera and lenses are less than a year old so they would be covered under warranty.
I think I may have a focus issue with the 17-55 and wish to send in the lenses and camera to Canon for calibration.
The 28-135 seems good, the 17-55 seems to back focus a bit , although from 17-30 or so, it seems to front focus - is that possible ?
Anyway,
if I live in Fla., where do I send it, and what should I include to send - ie.
Sample pictures ?
Thanks,
Chris

Wow, no responses on this ?
I can look up the factory center locations, that's not the problem.
I see that they have a couple to choose from, and I was wondering if other users had better luck with one over another ( cal.
Vs n.j. ) or use one of the authorized service facilities.
And is it better to send in sample images, or just let them do their thing.

Take a picture of a ruler at a 45 degree angle.
Use f/2.8 and take multiple pictures at different focal lengths.
Use the center AF point and focus on a number.
If the focus is in front or behind that number, you have a problem.
My 30D was spot-on with the 17-55, and my 40D is too.
This lens has great AF, I would not settle for anything less than excellence.

I tried the rulers, test sheets, batteries, and just plain shooting.
Def.
A problem.
( The 17-55 has the problem, the 28-135 is good ( go figure !!
) )
I want to send it in, but am curious if there is some consensus if one repair center for canon might be better than another, or is it pretty much equal, or do you have to send it to one based on where you live.
I was getting pretty frustrated with the lens situation, and was thinking of dumping canon for nikon - but I really like the canon and want it to work as well as I know it has for others.

However, having frequented these forums for quite a few years I can tell you that both Canon Repair Facilities have had their share of compliments and complaints.
If I was in your shoes my choice would be to pick whichever facility resulted in the lowest shipping charges.

I sent mine in with my 30D.
I found that with the 17-55 focus was hit and miss on very close subjects but worked fine on anything that was 3 feet away +
They did calibrate both body and lens but now I have back focus on my 70-200 but perfect on my macro, 17-55 and 10-22....
I just dont think theres a perfect solution unless you send in all your lenses and body and each one is matched

As long as they get the 17-55 right !
I will be happy, it's why I got the cannon in the first place !
I just have the 28-135 for backup,

You might consider upgrading to the 50D and set the camera for the best focus for each lens.
You will likely be happier with the outcome than sending them off to Canon only to find that something else now is different.

Nah.
His lens is obviously off.
Once he sees what the 17-55 can really do, the 28-135 will be on ebay.
My old 30D + 17-55:

Yea, getting the 50d sounds tempting, but it's a bit $$ for me now.
I just want to get my lens working it's best for now.
Maybe next year during some kind of sale, or Canon rebate.
