eBay Forums: LIES!! Lies and more lies. Lies on top ...
I logged-in to my PayPal account today, and was presented with the following message:
In the past, eBay allowed sellers to block eCheck payments in order to reduce confusion over clearing time and potential shipping delays.
Significant improvements have been made in addressing buyer expectations about eChecks, including information about eChecks added to eBay checkout, transaction details, and email communications.
With these improvements, eBay sellers offering PayPal must now accept all forms of PayPal payment, and are no longer allowed to block eChecks.
Sellers still have the ability to block eChecks on non-eBay related checkout.
What a crock!!
Their "significant improvements" did absolutely NOTHING to "address buyer expectations" on my recent eCheck purchase.
Oh yes...
PayPal was soooo clear that my eCheck customer emailed me after a mere 3 days to find out what was taking ME so long to send her item.
And then on the 7th day she wasted no time at all in giving me a negative feedback.
(Nice, huh?)
I hate eChecks and would rather LOSE a potential sale than have to get NEGGED because eCheck writers are filled to the brim with "confusion" and the REAL DELAYS (not merely "potential delays") associated with eChecks.
Do they think I was born yesterday?
Who actually believes this tripe?

You need to let your buyers know what to expect.
Tell them the payment was with an echeck and if they meant to pay via CC or Debit Card to check and see if their card info needs to be updated, cancel the echeck payment and then pay by the CC or debit card for instant payment.
If the echeck payment is indeed correct then to be informed that an echeck has to clear, per PayPal User Agreement, before the item is shipped.
Let the buyer know you will ship their item as soon as the echeck clears.
Let them know that it is easy to check their paypal account so they can see that the payment is indeed PENDING and when the echeck clears it will show CLEAR, all they need to do is log into their paypal accouont.

Well then what you do is refund their payment and file a UID against them.
Tell them it is just routine and that they do not need to do anything.
Then when they don't respond to teh UID close after 8 days and file with eBay to remove their neg for not responding to the dispute.

I think that when a buyer pays with an echeck, it shows completed on their side.
I email my buyers who pay this way and let them know that as soon as their echeck clears in 4-5 days, I will ship their item.
Then, when the check clears, I email them again to let them know the check cleared THAT day and I will ship that day, or if to late to ship then, that it will ship the next day.
I have so far, not had a problem.

I could be wrong about it showing pending on the buyers side.
ANY BUYERS OUT THERE WHO'VE PAID BY ECHECK?

It shows pending, and anyone with a brain clicks the details link in their PP account which explains how e-checks work.
PP even tells you it's an e-check and explains, if someone bothers to read the notification email.

It's completely silly that people want to do monetary transactions and can't be bothered to read how it works.
It's not monopoly money, it's real money.

Yikes - I've seen echecks to take 3 weeks to clear, and in one case (Canada), the check bounced 3 times before it finally cleared.
Supposedly has improved since my last eCheck encounter.
I did not neg. or threaten to neg the buyer.
Pending is normal - lay back and paint the house - don't forget to scrape and sand to bare wood - it will probably clear at some point.
Just let the buyer know there might be a big lag between their payment date and you clearance date.
Most legit buyers won't sweat it as long as its not a heart transplant or a gift on a deadline.
If he's antsy you have little recourse - he can neg away and you're stuck.
Just advise of the facts - politely - in your negative feedback reply if it comes to that.
Good luck.

Oops - didn't see the part where she hit you with the red apple already.
Starfleet has the next best option, then.
That failing, then post your polite, factual reply.
Won't help in your case, but will alert other sellers to the potential issue - eChecks do have a tendency to bounce higher than basketballs.
