The Strangers - GameTrailers.com Forums
The film is allegedly inspired by true events (the film's website says "The horrifying events that took place in the Hoyt family's vacation home at 1801 Clark Road on February 11, 2005, are still not entirely known"), but there is no documented case upon which the film is based.
However, the story does contain elements that bear a resemblance to the real life Manson murders that took place in 1969, the still-unsolved Keddie resort murders that took place in California in 1981, as well as the family-murder case of Jeffrey R.
MacDonald (this case is believed to be an unlikely candidate for the inspiration), among various home-invasions that have taken place in history.
The script is commonly said to be a remake of the 2006 French horror movie Them, or "Ils", which is also about a couple attacked by strangers in their home.
However, while the films are similar, The Strangers is not a remake of that movie.
In fact, The Strangers was written two years before "Ils" was made.
There have also been comparisons drawn between this movie, and the Austrian remake Funny Games, as they both deal with families fighting back against sadistic home invaders.

Cant be worst than the last 30 mins of Ils.
After seeing Ils, I dont really see how this is an american remake of it.
It seems like they took elements from Ils and mixed it with an american masked slasher movie.
I dont have high hopes for it, But i am kinda interested in seeing it since its been too long since a decent american horror movie.

I saw the preview for it at Harold and Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay.
I am not into horror movies, but during the preview.
The girls sitting behind me seemed pretty freaked out about it.

Just saw it. Incredibly slow start, and it really dosen't keep you going.
I found myself becomming more interested in listening to my sleeping dog snore than this movie.
If you really must see it, rent it, because otherwise it will just sit on your shelf gaining dust.

That was easily THE worst movie i have EVER seen.
I can't believe they released it in theaters.
It was so boring and it didn't even deserve its rating.

Sucked bad. I saw it twice...don't ask me why.
Saw it in the theater and then the uncut DVD.
Guess what is different about the theater version and the uncut version!
There is an extra scene at the end of the movie that is like 30 seconds long and has absolutely nothing violent or gory or anything in it.
Yet that made it TOO SCARY FOR THEATERS.
When the "strangers" first show up it is a little intense.
It has a couple jump scares right after one another.
After that it just gets boring and lame and the ending is horrible and painful to watch.
Oh and it's not based on true events at all.
Maybe inspired is a better thing to say.
The director never said he based it on any real event.
Also, the actors were interviewed and asked about it and they laughed and said we have no idea why it says that.
They just said that it was just something the studio attached to it to get more people into theaters.
Which is completely obvious and true.

A very good movie.
My theater was 3/4 empty when I saw it and hearing some kid yell "OH SHIT!" when the man with the burlap sack mask appeared in the background really made my night.

So i rented it last week and was definitly not let down
