The 10 Worst Draft Picks This Decade - InterBasket - International Basketball & Euroleague Forum
The 10 Worst Draft Picks This Decade
#1) Darko Milicic - Taken 2nd overall by the Pistons in 2003
Players that were passed on: Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade
Yes, the Pistons went on to win a Championship in 2004, and that kept the criticism at bay for a while.
However, although it appeared they were a dynasty in the making, Detroit hasn't returned to the Promised Land since.
The Pistons have now been eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals three years in a row, and are on their third coach in four years.
In place of Milicic, imagine sliding 'Melo, Wade, or Bosh onto that stacked roster.
Darko started just two games during his three wasted seasons in Motown.
The three players selected after him have more All-Stars game starts than that.
Yikes. Joe Dumars has been a terrific GM, but this must still burn a hole in his gut.
#2) Fran Vazquez 11th overall by the Magic in 2005
Passed on Danny Granger, David Lee, Monta Ellis
One of the all time great draft day blunders in the history of the NBA.
After stating he was would play in the States, the Magic were crushed when Vazquez made an abrupt u-turn shortly after the draft and decided to stay in Spain.
Needless to day, it's never a good sign when you spend a lottery pick on a guy who asks his girlfriend if it is okay if he heads off to America.
Vazquez remains the only firstrounder drafted between 2000 and 2006 that has never suited up for a single NBA game.
(There are recent rumors Fran may come back to play for the Magic at some point soon.)
#3) Nikoloz Tskitishvili - 5th overall by the Nuggets in 2002
Passed on: Amare Stoudemire, Caron Butler
Along with Darko, Tskitishvili would eventually become the poster boy for over-hyped European prospects.
The Nuggets nabbed 'Skita early on back in 2002, hoping that his combination of size and shooting touch would deliver Dirk Nowitzki-type statistics.
Instead, Tskitishvili's combination of defensive ineptness and a lack of toughness resulted in him flopping around the Association for a while and trying to latch onto summer-league teams.
This pick was a major reason why Kiki Vandeweghe got canned a few years later
and a major reason why teams are hesitant to gamble on Europeans such as Danilo Gallinari this year.
#4) Kwame Brown 1st overall by the Wizards in 2001
Passed on Pau Gasol, Tyson Chandler, Joe Johnson
Michael Jordan was a God as a basketball player.
As an executive? Eh, not so much
The Wizards won the 2001 lottery and had Michael Jordan calling the shots it seemed like the sky was the limit.
However, MJ picked Kwame and Kwame never picked up the game.
#5) Marvin Williams 2nd overall by the Hawks in 2005
Passed on Chris Paul and Deron Williams
Let's see
you need a point guard and there are two top-tier PG's sitting there for you on the draft board.
Two point guards that had proven themselves as stars on the collegiate level.
No-brainer, right?
Wrong. Atlanta instead opted to take forward Marvin Williams out of UNC.
Williams has had a solid career thus far, and will likely be a good player for years to come.
But Paul and Williams are two of the best young players in the NBA, both representing Team USA this summer.
(Oh, and the Hawks still owe Speedy Claxton, signed in lieu of drafting a PG, $11 million dollars over the next two seasons).
#6) Rafael Araujo 8th overall by Raptors in 2004
Passed on Andre Iguodala, Al Jefferson, Josh Smith
This pick was universally panned as soon as David Stern announced it.
Araujo was a mediocre (at best) player in college who was ranked in the low-20's on most team's draft boards.
But, for some unknown reason, the Raptors decided to take a flier on an unskilled 7-footer.
The 76ers, ecstatic and stunned by their good fortune, scooped up Andre Iguodala with the very next pick.
The rest, as they say, is history.
#7) Shelden Williams - 5th overall by the Hawks in 2006
Passed on Brandon Roy, Rudy Gay, Rajon Rondo
Unfortunately for Hawks fans, Atlanta makes its second appearance on the list.
One year after passing up on CP3 and Deron Williams, the Hawks were back at it.
With Brandon Roy sitting there for the taking, Atlanta went with the slow-footed Williams, whom they later shipped to Sacramento after a disappointing 18 months in the ATL.
#8) Marcus Fizer - 4th overall by the Bulls in 2000
Passed on Mike Miller, Michael Redd, Hedo Turkoglu
Fizer flamed out after bouncing around the league (and the police blotter) for a few seasons.
The worst part about this pick was that the Bulls had selected Elton Brand the year before, so they definitely weren't filling a need when selecting Fizer.
#9) Troy Bell 16th overall by Boston (traded to Memphis) in 2003
Passed on: David West, Boris Diaw, Leandro Barbosa, Josh Howard
Extra points awarded because it was derided as a terrible pick at the time and it proved to be worse than imagined.
Bell scored a total of 11 points during his illustrious NBA career.
#10) Kedrick Brown 11th overall by Boston in 2001
Passed on: Richard Jefferson, Zach Randolph, Tony Parker
Not that Celtics fans would complain about anything right now, but this was a horrible selection.
With plenty of proven, gifted basketball players left on the board, there was no need to reach for a kid from Okaloosa-Walton Community College.

Quote: : #2) Fran Vazquez What is Vázquez doing in the list, seriously.
And at number 2 o_O He didn't even prove himself in the NBA, he cannot be considered a bust.
And it's not like he won't be able to play (as the author mentions), he's 25, still many years left.
Whether he'll make it or not, that's another matter.
Quote: : Needless to day, it's never a good sign when you spend a lottery pick on a guy who asks his girlfriend if it is okay if he heads off to America.
So we get to know that for the author money is more important than love.
And America
Generally agree about the rest and about the no.
1 of course.

He didn't say Vázquez was a bust, he said it was a bad pick, and I agree.
There's a reason international players that don't want to head immediately for the NBA are picked much later than 12th.

All right then, remove the word bust I mean the same (also with the second Quote: involved).

Here's my opinion about drafts: they need to be analyzed by looking at the thinking before the draft was made.
When you look back at what Joe Dumars was thinking with Darko, it's clear why he picked him.
Everybody at the time thought Darko was a Top 5 pick.
The same goes for Marvin Williams and Kwame Brown and others.
At the time, everybody agreed that the were the best players available.
I mean, the biggest "bust" of all was Jay Williams from Duke as the number 2 pick in 2002.
Practically everybody in that draft had a better career (Stoudemire, Boozer, Dunleavy, Butler, Nene, Wagner, Welsch, Songaila, hell...everybody, even in the second round).
Williams had an awful automobile accident.
That doesn't make that pick a "bust," does it?
How could Chicago know he would get in an accident?
How could Detroit know Milicic would have ego problems with Larry Brown?
How could Washington know Kwame would have ego problems with Michael Jordan?
|
 |
Lists are fun, and I understand what they're getting at, but the problems with this list is that they act like as if Darko wasn't picked second by Detroit, he wouldn't have been picked in the next 3-4 positions?
That a team like Toronto wouldn't have jumped on him instead of Bosh if he was still available?
Going back, if Detroit took Melo at #2, Denver would be stuck with the Darko-history.
I think a true "worst pick" is the ones that are complete surprises that generally hang around after the first 15 picks or so...
When things aren't quite as analyzed and where the draft get a little murky.
A true "worst pick" would be someone like Renaldo Balkman (if he remains crappy).
Balkman was a complete surprise pick when he was selected 20th overall.
Balkman was pegged to be in the second round...
But no, Isiah Thomas selects him way before he needed to, with players like Rajon Rondo, Paul Millsap, Leon Powe, Jordan Farmar, Craig Smith, and Daniel Gibson still on the board.

There's another problem with draft picks...different teams, different coaches, different fates.
Maybe Melo wouldnt have flourished under Larry Brown and Milicic could've done better job at Denver?
Maybe Pau Gasol would've had trouble adjusting with Wizards style?

And the Hawks still cannot justify why they picked Marvin Williams instead of Chris Paul

Rafael Arujo, 8th pick by the raps and Luke jackson, 10 pick by the cavs, of the 2004 draft are bad picks.
Their teams passed on josh smith, al jefferson...

As for the Summer League, Derrick Rose is also not good...
