Java Web Start & JNLP - Unofficial Web Start/JNLP FAQ started

Hi, I started the Unofficial Web Start/JNLP FAQ page.

The Unofficial FAQ complements Sun's official Java Web Start FAQ page and aims to provide you with information that is not included on the official page for whatever reason.

Your contributions are welcome even if you are not a multi national company. Check it out at http://www.geocities.com/vamp201/jwsfaq.html - Gerald Bauer

Hi, I updated the Unofficial FAQ.

Here are the new entries: * How to share cookies/sessions between Web Start apps and servlets? * How can I control Web Start's update policy? * Can I use Sun's J2EE Reference Implementation EJBs? * How can I connect to Borland's AppServer? Thanks for your contribution.

I will try to update it bi-weekly (that is, every second week) unless I'm on vacation (which will happen pretty soon). - Gerald Bauer

In the future, how will new forum participants learn that the FAQ exists?

Hi, I will post a message with new and updated entries bi-weekly (that is, every second week) so that new participants can learn that it exists. Ideally, Sun would add a link to the Unofficial FAQ.

However, I guess this won't happen any time soon and I don't think that a petition would help. - Gerald

Hi, I updated the Unofficial FAQ.

Here are the new and updated entries: * What does the upcoming support of Web Start in Java 1.4 look like? * Can I use Web Start for command line/batch apps? * Can Web Start update itself? * Does Web Start support SSL? * Can I use Web Start for Intranet apps? * How can I pass in arguments to my app using a HTML hyperlink? Enjoy. - Gerald Bauer

Hi, I added two new entries: * How can I turn off the sandbox? * Web Start returns a Bad MIME Type error.

What's wrong? This is very likely the last update before my five week vactation.

I'll back in fall. - Gerald

Hi, I'm back. I added new entries to the Unofficial FAQ: * How can I use Web Start and JCE together? * How can I use Web Start and JAAS together? * How can I use Web Start and JSSE together? * How can I use Web Start and Comm API together? * How can I use Web Start and Java 3D together? * Can I use native libraries for my apps? * Can I make Web Start use my own policy file? * Can I change my apps look and feel? * Why doesnýt Sunýs Javascript Web Start detection script work for my household browser? * Does Web Start support Mozilla? * Can I use my own URLs for downloading JREs? * Why can't Web Start and Microsoft Proxy Server get along? * Can I install Web Start on Windows without admin privileges? * How can I use Web Start and Jini together? Thanks to everyone for posting their insights.

Note, that I cannot answer your individual questions. Please, post your questions on Sun's forum instead of mailing me.

Any corrections, however, are more than welcome, please send them to vamp201@yahoo.com. - Gerald Bauer PS: Here is the Unofficial Web Start/JNLP FAQ link just in case: http://www.geocities.com/vamp201/jwsfaq.html I will make a pdf version available next week once I'm back in my office.

Hello Gerald, thanks for updating that valuable list! Some notes: Regarding the topic "Can I use my own URLs for downloading JREs?" This is what the spec tells.

Personally I have not tested if this feature works in practice. What is very strange, and lets me suspect that this feature is not working correctly is, that such a server should have been implemented by Sun here: http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se I tried to download a different JVM into Web Start via this official update server, but it did never work. (Anyone had more luck?) Regarding "How can I debug apps under Web Start?" The information given helps to run the Web Start application in debugging mode, but it lacks information on how to attach a debugger. The key is that -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,address=8118 will make the running app wait for a socket connection to port 8118.

It is now possible to fire up the command line java debugger and to attach to the JVM via that port. Let me give details in a later posting.

(I have to leave :) Regards, Marc

The link doesn't work.

I get a geocities error page

Sorry it says you exceeded the allotted data transfer.

Can you set up a second site (i.e.

A mirror) in case this continues to happen.

It is available again.

Guess there is a bandwidth/day limit. Regards, Marc

I have another entry candidate: Launching the Java Web Start application manager from a web page The Sun demo page uses an undocumented feature: http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/apps/player.jnlp If one click to such a link like above, which links to this player.jnlp file <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

<!-- Jump specific JNL file for launching the player -->

<player/> the Web Start application manager will get launched from the browser. I have not seen this player tag documented in the jnlp specs. Regards, Marc

Hi, Marc: Thanks for your valuable corrections and new entries.

I will add them in the next couple of days. I'm sorry that the Unofficial FAQ is from time to time unavailable because I hit my Geocities transfer limit. If the Unofficial FAQ is currently unavailbe, please search for jnlp faq in www.google.com and use google's cached version. I will try to find a solutions over the next couple of days.

I will create a pdf version for easy download and offline usage and I will move my large jars to a different site as they seem to eat up my Geocities monthly transfer limit pretty fast. - Gerald

Your FAQ is pretty busy.

I get the following message from geocities when i try to access it... Sorry, this site is temporarily unavailable! The web site you are trying to access has exceeded its allocated data transfer.

Visit our help area for more information. Access to this site will be restored within an hour.

Please try again later. http://www.geocities.com/vamp201/jwsfaq.html

The entry, " Does Web Start support Mozilla?" states that you have to configure the mime type manually.

Perhaps this is true on Linux or other platforms but not on Windows.

Once Java Web Start is installed on Windows you can use Mozilla to click on links and have them launch.
