I'm a big big girl in a big big world (but I am working on it!) - John Stone Fitness Forums

Hi, I started my journey in May this year at 103kg (227lbs) and a 42 inch waist.

Yes on a 5ft 5 frame that does resemble a barrel. I have been kickboxing for a few years (started at 113kg 250lb in 2005) but got stuck around the 100kg mark for ages, it was like a magic number to break. A friend of mine put me on to this site and got me going up to the gym.

I have been going 3 times a week plus the kickboxing class, my workouts go something like this.. Cardio - 10 minutes on eliptical Warm up stretching Punchbag work - 10 minutes Weights (see below) More punchbag work - 10 mins Second set on weights More punchbag work - 5-10 mins If I am on my own 3rd set of weights and warm down. I do the following on the machines for 12 reps Leg extension 100lbs Hamstring Curl 60lbs Seated Row 130lbs Seated high row 45lb each arm Chest Press 70lbs Calf Raise 160lb 45 degree leg press 245lbs (now 290lbs) I bench press 55lbs and do 15lbs on the dumbel curl. The progress so far: Weight 97.5kg (lost 5.5kg) Waist 39 inches (lost 3 inches) I am starting to have trouble keeping my trousers up, (no dirty comments please!) but I still have a long way to go.

A trip on a Cambodian bus where I just couldn't fit in the seat was a reminder of the work I still have to do. My targets: Weight 85kg Waist 34inches (i.e 10 years ago!) Every journey starts with a single step, but I feel like I have finally taken a great leap towards a new lifestyle and better health. If you have any advice, please drop me a post.

Always glad for the support. I'll let you know how the journey goes! TTFN

Wow, killer workout! Good progress.

Just wanted to mention that the circuit style that you're doing in your weights workout is more like a muscular endurance type of training, rather than a strength building or muscle building routine.

That's great, because it's in line with your goals, which is to increase metabolism and lose fat.

But if you reach a point where you have goals of strength increase or muscle increase, you might want to separate those weight workouts out from the cardio so that you won't be so tired already, and try to work closer to failure on more of those sets. Keep at it!

Hi, Thanks guava , it is a tough workout, but I REALLY need to get the weight off.

I would love to be able to just run again, but it is too much pressure on the joints at the moment.

I will look at changing the workout as you suggested when I get under 85kg. I am looking forward to my workout later tonight, it was a day of rest yesterday as I had some people over for dinner.

Does cooking and madly tidying the house for an hour count as cardio!!?? S

Hi, I seem to have hit a wall this weekend and feel really tired.

I did my workout on Friday night and saturday night (2 cycles) and then had a bit of a swim - well more like a mes about in the pool on Sunday.

I just couldn't bring myself to do anything else on Sunday (was planning on the gym) and instead collapsed on the bed for a few hours.

I have also been doing my laundry this weekend and in Cambodia that is getting a big tub of water, a scrubbing brush and some poweder.

The wringing out of towels feels a lot like training, actually my arms are really aching this morning. Am I doing too much, or am I being weak?! S

I think ur body was exhausted and needed the rest.

Its good to listen to it and not overdo it.

Don't forget that rest is a very important part of the weight loss equation.

Hi, I had a bit of a rest and put on a pound!

I did do a little workout last night, just a few arm reps, squats and a bashing of my punchball.

I need to get back down the gym tonight.

I want to keep going, I am meeting my brother at the weekend in Bangkok, I haven't seen him since Christmas and I want to see if he can notice the difference! S

Well I went to meet my brother in Bangkok (I live in Cambodia so it isn't far) and had a break from the sensible eating although I did do 2 hours in the gym on Sunday and walked about 20km round the city.

I still put on 3lbs in 3 days by going back to my normal eating habits (OK plus a couple of ice-creams - you can't get safe ice cream here).

I am exhuasted and really quite depressed.

My boss is being an SH-1T and seeing family only made the loneliness of being so far away from home more apparent. I really need to get back down the gym to undo the damage, but I can hardly lift a pen today I am so tired. All I want to do is have a very large bar of chocolate and curl up into a ball (and I don't even really like chocolate). HELP

HELP I fell off the wagon these past couple months and managed to add a bunch of weight back on.

The only thing you can do is get back on the horse and go at it again.

The icecream and chocolate is what attacked me these past couple weeks along with pizza.

Yeah, its good but when you get back on the scale the only thing it does is make you more depressed (at least it does to me). I completly understand wanting chocolate, curling up and not dealing with anything.

Your lonely, you miss your family, your not happy with your weight, your depressed....eating would be my old solution.

Now...I just have to realize that I want to look better and not go back to be the fat girl or the fat Mom.

Even thou I still feel I'm not thin or muscular enough yet the only way I'm going to get there is by eating healthy and avoiding all the junk!

What do you want more is what I always ask myself. You made the first steps to get in shape and change so stick to it....your journal will save you.

I surf the interent or bitch in my journal and someone is always there at JSF to say "YOU CAN DO IT!!!" Before you know it you've wasted enough time and the cravings for chocolate or your old ways disappear and you can move on! Hang in there!

We're all hear for you!

YOU CAN DO IT! Get some sleep (you sound exhausted)!

Hi There, Thanks for the support kree.

I eventually went to see the doc last week as I was so exhausted.

She signed me off for the rest week saying I had a virus of some kind and needed complete rest.

I also had an x-ray on my crushed finger and found out it is broken so no kickboxing for a month. I am still a little tired and my glands are still swollen, but having slept almost all the way through Thursday and Friday I am definitely rested and must have needed it.

I was down to 96kg on Saturday, although the curry last night will not have helped but I needed cheering up!

Back on the straight and narrow today.

I have bought a weights bench at the weekend to be able to do some lifting at home when it is too late/wet to get up to the gym.

This is the wettest month of the rainy season and it can really deluge.

Unfortunately the water has less and less places to go as the city expands and so the floods can be bad (although short lived).

It is the colour and smell of the water that worries me most though! Right, I have a lot of work to catch up on. I wish you all well. S

Good, god, girl, you're a power-house!!!

You are strong! Keep up the good work, and YOU CAN DO IT!!

Take a look around here.

Look at some of the before/after pics of people.

It can make it much easier.

Get Well Soon!

Hello. I am feeling much better thanks.

The finger still feels a little strange and I will continue to be careful with it.

I got back in the gym this week although I have still been very tired most of the time.

I am going to go back down tonight and try to get back up to 3 sessions this week and 4 next week. I am signing up for the Angkor marathon event in December, although I am going to do the 10km rather than half marathon (first learn walk, then learn fly!) There will be a group of VSO volunteers from Cambodia doing different races in the event where you run around the Angkor Wat temple complex (very cool ).

It will give me something to aim towards both to lose weight and improve my running. Right, best get back to work Gym tonight. TTFN

Good Luck with your goal!

Hello, Well I am back in the gym and training again. I am down to 95kg and pushing on to get to 90kg.

That is a 8kg (17.6lb) loss since the end of May.

I am more motivated by the 10cm (4 inch) reduction in my waist. I was in the gym for an hour and a half yesterday.

I did my workout and got carried away on the cross training machine so my warm down became half an hour.

Must be getting fitter as in May that would have killed me! Off to the gym tonight for a lesson in Khmer Kickboxing, which I am sure will finish me off.

I will have a rest day Tuesday, as a friend is leaving Cambodia and is having her leaving party. I hope you are all well and cruising towards your targets. TTFN

Wow! What excellent progress!

You must feel great about it.

Morning, Tired today!

I went to the Khmer (Cambodian) Kickboxing class last night at my gym and it was great.

It pusehd me 20% further than I would take myself and I am still standing!

I'll definitely be going along again next week. Thanks modmaven, I do feel great about the progress.

I can't get too carried away (excuse the pun, as not many people could carry me!) as I still have a BMI of 35 and have a lot more work to do.

I am sure it will get steadily harder to reduce the weight event though I seem to have made a step change in my fitness. I did like the article in the New York Times "Better to be fat and fit than skinny and unfit" - that made my day! http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/19/health/19well.html Resting today as I have a leaving party to go to, one of my fellow volunteers is finishing and off home.

Teaching kickboxing again Wednesday. Keep smiling. S

Hi, Had a day off yesterday to try and beat the blanket of exhaustion wrapping itself around me.

I went to my friends leaving party and ate too many chocolate brownies. I am still very tired, I can't remember the last time I woke up feeling refreshed.

Maybe it is the heat, I'm not sure.

It only gets down to about 28 centigrade in my room at night.

I have to have the fan on to sleep. Tonight I am teaching a kick boxing class.

At the moment I can't imagine dragging myself through it, but I always feel better when I get going. Best get some work done, only 10 weeks left until I finish my placement here. Take Care. S

Depressed today. 96.5kg so 3lbs on. Did a class last night, but don't get enough exercise when I am teaching.

No training tonight as it is the big kickboxing night at the Olympic stadium.

I will probably sweat off 3lbs though! S

Hello, Ok, not been doing very well on the whole posting thing.

I have been very busy at work, trying to raise money for a boat in the Cambodian water festivals (if you have a spare $1000 do let me know!) and going to the gym!! I am now at 92.5kg.

I am averaging 1lb a week loss overall although it moves up and down depending on whether I have visitors (eat bad food!) get a Cambodian stomach ache (eat BAD food) or go to the gym. In a heavy gym week, I rarely lose weight.

I am however 48cm down on the 10 measurements I take. I need to push on again now, so I decided I had better start to post again.

It is great to have people noticing the difference in me and having to buy smaller clothes (although that is tough on a volunteer's "wage"). One of the volunteers who had not seen me since June, said "have you had Dengue Fever!?" as I have lost 10.5kg (23lb), I had to say it was through hard work! Going to Khmer kickboxing class tonight. Catch you later. S

Great progress!! Don´t get too obsessed over what the scale is telling you.

Don´t forget exchanging muscle for fat is always good.

Your clothes are telling that the hard work is paying off. Keep up the good work.
