Black Americans Vs African Americans
Which should now be considerd PC?
The fact that An african can come over and become a citizen and be called African American and then you turn around and call someone's who's familia y ancestors date back hundreds and hundreds of years ago in this land we call america...
I find it disturbing.
I dont acknowlege blacks as just African-American...but Black.
I refuse. People like Claudette Ortiz, would it be fair to call her African American?
When in fact she's a spanish black who's has african and spanish blood running through her veins??
You just can't go up to anyone and classifie them as african american.
After all, Whites are french, italian, german, british, canadian, Irish, etc and I hate the fact that this america, reduces anyone with darker tone to one place on earth...

Personally I like to refer to myself as African American.
You know I feel this is not really as big as an issue as african americans/nigerians/jamaicans/too many to name (& other races for that matter) referring to each other as "Nigg@s".
If we can solve that issue then we can decide on what the politically correct ways to address people of different african heritages.

Well long time ago jesse jackson, al sharpton, and NAACP discussed about changing to african american instead of black american and it was in 1983.
Most black people argued about black american vs african american because they said that they were not from africa.
They were born in america, they considered as black american.
If a person was born from africa and moved to america, a person became african american.
Just like if a person who was from asia, moved to america, a person became asian american.
in my opinion i am black american because i was born in america.
i really dont understand why NAACP and black leaders chose african american instead of black american.
When i apply an application, i write black american and sometimes black hispanic.
Either one

One of my friends who is white moved here from Africa and became a citizen.
One day she had to fill out some form and naturally, she classified herself as an African American.
She IS an African American.
When a black girl read what she had filled out, she became defensive and started yelling at her.
The black woman thought that SHE was an African American, and the white girl could not be.
That's just stupid.
African American refers to someone who is born in Africa.
An English teacher tried to make me change "black woman" to African American in a paper and I went off.
I will not lie even if it is PC.
I don't give a damn about being PC.
Whenever I hear a black person refer to themselves as African Americans, I always continue the conversation refering to myself as a European American.
It always makes them mad, but it's the same thing.

I agree that if born in America, we are first and foremost American.
Then, if one must differenciate us from the wide variety of Americans that live here, we are Black American.
I agree that African Americans are Africans who emmigrate to America and become citizens.
The whole concept of calling all black people African-Americans came at a time when we were encouraged to embrace our roots.
While I still beleive in that ideal, we who were born in America are Black Americans.
We can still embrace our African roots and call ourselves Black Americans.

A friend of mine she was born in jamaica.
She moved to america also used to be in my class.
When she applied an application, she was very upset bout ethnic background.
She asked me why people put african american in form.
I said same things too, she said she wasnt from africa.
She was from jamaica.
She wrote down black jamaican and that what she wanted to chose.

And It is important to differenciate us two.
To call us african american is unfair to who we really are.

Just like you broke that down, I have to break it down like this, Most blacks in america are mixed and intermixed with other races, be it, Indian, Italian, Hispanic, etc.
We are mostly mutted out.
Maybe the word African-american shouldn't exist as PC.
If I were to be fair to who I truley am, and even if my father wasn't hispanic, no doubt my Black father would have al ittle more than african in him.
My mother alone is black, indian, and white and its not 33.3% each way but her mother is black and 15% indian and her father is mixed black and white.
There goes my cultures on her side alone.
Then, as a result of cubans and puerto ricans intermixing, my father is afro-cuban and puerto rican.
I'm just as black and just as mutted as my black bros and sis in america.
But I'm not african and neither are they.
I'm just trying to combat the american theory that just because we are "black" and I mean by skin, we originate in Africa and like I've said, I refuse to believe that the only black origination was in Africa!
It just doesn't make since.
So if my first black ancestor originated in Spain, or Antarctica, or Italy, then if you wanna go by the books, I'm technically Italian-american.
Anywho who knows me, knows I take pride in my heritages so I wont call myslef an African-american because I'm not.
I'm so much more.
And like you said, they dont classify themselves as African American when they come here...

Because its a continent and not a race right?
With citizenships right?
Each african is part of an ethnic/tribal group right?
So damnit, I say, If you dont know what tribal group i'm from and I was born here, Call me just what you call your fucking brothers and sisters and Its not European-American!
Whites are seen as American and when they wanna be "fair" they'll say caucasian american but that's hardly.
They call themselves white and refer to anything darker then them as African-American or Hispanic.

I would never forget my roots.
Even though most of us can't tell you where they lie because we've all bought into the "bullshit" that just becase our ancestors were black they were african.
I look at it like this, I know they picked up more slaves in other places than Africa...their origin is unknown.
So how can you fairly even know if you have any roots in Africa?

It's an old and tired system that doesn't really work anymore because of interracial reproduction.
You will see that it will become irrelevent and inconsistent as the years barrel on.
Anyway, we should classify people by their BBQ sauce preference.
Anyone who doesn't like BBQ sauce will be shipped away to a remote island near Antarctica.
We will inlist numerous cannibals to challenge their survival.
