Report: Donadoni Sacked!
"According to BBC Sport, Roberto Donadoni has been sacked as coach of the Italy national team."
Donadoni has come under serious fire in the Italian press following Sunday's Euro 2008 quarter final exit to Spain.
There have been strong calls for Donadoni to be replaced by Marcello Lippi, and indeed large sections of the media believe that there is already a deal in place for the 2006 World Cup-winning coach to return.
BBC Sport claims that the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) have informed Donadoni that he has been sacked, although as yet there is no official confirmation.
Donadoni signed a two-year extension until 2010 shortly before Euro 2008 began, but a rescission clause was inserted that meant that the deal could be scrapped by either party if Italy did not reach the semi-finals.
After the penalty shootout loss to Spain, Donadoni vowed that he would not leave without being pushed.
"Resign?
The thought would never even entered my brain," he stated.
"I don't have a reason.
We only lost a game on penalties.
You can't say things work when you win but don't work when you lose on penalties.
We will talk and decide.
It doesn't make any sense to talk about whether I deserve to carry on."
FIGC President, Giancarlo Abete, then came out and said that a decision would be made this week.
"Over the next few days we will reflect and make a decision about this," he explained.
"It doesn't make any sense to make a decision in the heat of the moment."
"In the next few days we will discuss what will happen.
We'll retrace our steps."
Donadoni took charge of the Azzurri following the 2006 World Cup success in Germany, but he has never enjoyed favour both with the press and the public.
