Do Native Americans (American Indians) have a problem with Native American (Indian) mascots on sports teams?
Do Native Americans (American Indians) have a problem with Native American (Indian) mascots on sports teams?
I ask this question because I agree that it steroetypes Indians, yet it stereotypes them as brave warriors.
And also, on top of this, how often would people (Non-Indians) think about Native Americans if it wasnt for these team names subtly reminding us.
In so many ways, it is a reminder of the Native American past...both the strong, brave side of their culture as well as the extermination side created by European explorers.

As a native american, prefer to call this "Rubicks Cube" logic, I wrote a paper about it in college.
It's exactly what you state, nobody would even begin to give a thought to native americans unless mascots or a football team became involved.
We rank right up there with the Michelin man or Mr Staypuft marshallmow man, nobody gives a damn until tires are involved or smores, that's a pathetic argument.
You cannot honor something, people or places when you know nothing about them, that's fact.
What tribe do mascosts honor?
Which people? And whose ancestor?
I am not a stereotype, I'm just an ndn that you don't understand so don't you dare go on about "brave side of their culture" or "reminder of the Native American past" when, WE ARE STILL HERE!
Nobody on the "extermination side" has taken me and mind out, so check yourself before you go off about people you don't know a damn thing about.

Seems to me they know far more about your culture and life than you do.
You act like you were around in the 1800's and went through this and that's a major laugh on you.
Natives have no problem abusing whites for what their ancestors "Might" have done, but get aggravated when some one uses a tomahawk chop or wears a team logo.
Your race is all one sided in facing facts.
You live today and what you do with tomorrow decides your out come, not what happened ages ago.
If I took all the time Natives have used in here to bitch and moan I could have put one of you through college.
No ones tried to "Exterminate" you or I'm sure they would have done so by now.
Most Natives feel like they still have the army running them down and hunting them out for crimes against whites and that dog just don't bark.
I find it complimentary to remember ones heritage, but down right disgusting to relive it every day if it's something bad that dwell upon them.

I find the mascots and tomahawk chop and the mocking of war cries ..offensive.
I dont think its flattering to any race to have a 300 lb slob with a beer in his hand painting his face and donning feathers cheerleading for his team..WTF is that?..REDNECK!

Your post alone shows just how ignorant you are of Native people, their culture, their plight, and the way we think and act today.
You don't realize that what was started in the 1800's was carried on until the 1990's and there are still major after effects of it today.
I could carry on and on about this, but the simple fact of the matter is this: It would be a waste of my time and yours because your simple-minded, white-priviledged little brain will not and cannot fathom that anyone else could possibly have had a different life than yours.
I come across people like you all the time.
We don't remember our heritage, we live it still everyday.
That's something else you can't understand, because you live in generic white America.
Oh, and Natives abusing whites?
Oh, you poor little whitey can't hoot and holler at a baseball game without hearing about how Indians don't like your mascot.
I feel soooo sorry for you.
LOL!

Just so your "Dumb Ass"(Since you can't speak without name calling)understands what I'm saying without your racist mind going into a tail spin I'll try to explain it so even you can understand it.
MBT (More Bacon and Tomato's) can choose to live as a Native and therefore suffer if that's his choosing, or he can stop with the stupidity of living an antique Natives life and begin to live a modern Natives life which has more to offer.
Nothing is wrong with remembering ones ancestry, but to keep living it day to day will do nothing but hold one back from becoming successful.
If any Native (Especially those who didn't live in the 1800's) thinks they're ever going to get anything back then they are truly misguided by their own imaginations.
This government really don't owe them a thing for deeds done during war.
It would be like a lot of the small islands Japan took over during WW2 asking for reparations 60 years later for the atrocities committed on them and their people.
In war one side loses and one side wins, but Natives still think the war's going on like some hillbilly's who are still fighting the Civil War.
Natives can easily come into the American (Multi-cultured) society and have a great life if they so choose.
But unlike the people Japan decimated (Who show more pride) Natives want to keep dredging up the past and wallowing in it.
The land that most tribes (Not all) live on isn't their place of origin on this continent but a place where they were relocated.
To say the whites took this land (They paid for most of it) is ignorance at its finest.
Yes some treaties are still not honored, but more than not were.
The ones that have not been honored or paid for usually have problems arising from tribal lawyers wanting to change the lettering of the treaties which only causes more time for things to happen (Look it up son).
Not all whites are as one sided in their education of true facts as Natives would love to think.
We too seek the truth from both sides of the conflict and draw our own conclusions void of our up bringing.
I just wish some Natives would do the same.

They are just jealous they don't have a culture.
Either that, or their culture is so shallow they have to lash out at the closest culture they have near.
Native memory as a whole remembers the cock asian invasion just like yesterday.
Not easily forgotten.
Not dwelling on the past, living today as a native.
Living in two worlds, or cultures.
Real REZ natives.
I think most would rather return to old style living, but it is just not possible in this day and age.

speaking of ignorance...what you are talking about is assimilation which would mean the completion of the genocide that the US government practices even today against Native culture.
You are incapable of grasping this concept because you have no culture that is being threatened with extermination.
Continue with your blatant arrogance in calling someone else "racist" when your call for joining "mainstream" American society would accomplish what non-Natives have strived for since first stepping foot on this continent.
Now THAT is racism...

K rist, where do you people come from?
I act like I was around in the 1800's?
Well, you act like the 1800's shouldn't be relevant when history is very relevant.
The history of my people is very relevant to me, 1800's and before then, as far back as possible.
Talk about "one sided" on your part.
If you think "No ones" tried to exterminate native people then you are better off continuing on your ignorant way.
You don't know how most natives feel, yet you're going to argue exactly that, in your own words, "Most Natives feel like...", that's a good one, brainiac.
The funny item on the table here is you actually reinforce my point, in your own awkward and unknowingly kind of way.
Most nds do relive their culture, honor it, respect it, because it was passed down to them from their ancestors and those who chose to remember, their efforts, fights to continue that history may be "disgusting" to you, but that's no real news considering people like yourself.
