McCain decides the surge started... before the surge started.
At issue are Mr. McCain's comments in a Tuesday interview with CBS.
The Arizona senator disputed Democrat Barack Obama's contention that a Sunni revolt against al-Qaeda combined with the dispatch of thousands more U.S.
Combat troops to Iraq to improve security there.
Mr. McCain called that a "false depiction."
Democrats jumped on his comments and said the Republican candidate was out of touch because the rebellion of U.S.-backed Sunni sheiks against al-Qaeda terrorists in Iraq's Anbar province was under way well before Mr.
Bush announced his decision to send 30,000 additional U.S.
Troops to Iraq.
Mr.
McCain said he didn't err.
"A surge is really a counterinsurgency made up of a number of components.
... I'm not sure people understand that 'surge' is part of a counterinsurgency."

Sure Johnny....
Nobody knows anything except for you.
By his thinking there are op's going on whenever someone poops...
Cause "op" is in the word "poop"

This is just like the time when he said he was going around Iraqi markets with little or no security without a vest.
He's altering the truth to fit his needs.

doesnt Bush do the same thing?

It kinda makes sense;
I mean, it takes more than just saying "go" for the Surge to have happened.
There was probably a lot of ground work laid before it was put into action.

I posted this stuff the night of and no one gave a damn.
Olberman seems to be the only one covering it in depth:

Matt, quit apologizing for mccain and look at what he said and the facts.
And CBS cut this part of the comments from their report.
And mccain whines about the media being biased?
Well, I guess in his favor, maybe.
The amount if stupidity and just plain horrible things coming out of mccain's mouth while obama is overseas is stupefying.
Mccain is desperately flailing around saying anything that strikes him.
He's desperate and this is exactly what people were predicting from him.
His temper takes over and any ability to edit what he says goes out the window.

I'm waiting for all of the McCain fans to come in and rant about how Keith Olbermann is a hack without giving any logical reasoning.

This came from CBS.
They edited it out of their broadcast and were caught at it.

That's a huge fuck up.
There should be more about it on the news.

Ah. I get it now.
McCain is talking about the counter-insurgency strategy in total, and how that is part of the lead-up to the Surge.
It's OK if no one bothered to listen to McCain's explanation.
McCain says that what happened is the Colonel uses the same kind of mentality and strategy of the surge (he later explains that the surge is based on the Colonel's strategy and methods).
Yes, the surge STARTED in January, but the same strategy was being used previous to that.
It is a really stilted argument, but it makes sense when you realize that The Surge and the strategy of the surge are two different things.

Right, because the surge was about sending more troops.
So, that could happen without sending more troops?
And mccain has a tendency to have to explain his stupidity after the fact, doesn't he?
*shakes head. Foreign leaders won't want to wait for an explanation after he's insulted them, especially the lame convoluted ones he comes up with.

I understand what he is saying, though not because it was stated succinctly and articulately..
But I do think he was trying to mislead people a little bit by over-simplifying his argument and hoping no one would notice that his words didn't quite match what actually happened.
He'd have gotten away with it if CBS hadn't edited the video and then put the transcript on the website.
Katie Couric didn't know enough to question it.
Most people wouldn't have noticed.
His argument makes sense if he doesn't try to redefine "surge." LOL.

The Surge is more than throwing troops at the problem.
