Dear all,
I think it is important that we all learn from the discussion that took place here.
It is important that we as engineers consider how our words influence society around us.
It is true that these discussion forms are here for any member of the IET to use and I would strongly encourage all the membership to use them.
At the same time it is important to realise that these forums are public and viewable by everyone with access to the internet.
Words posted here not only refelct on yourself but also all the other engineers who are members of the IET.
From time to time it is important to bring forward an issue for discussion on the road to seeking the best answer to it.
I encourage this as well.
I also encourage spending some time considering whether the correct channel has been used.
There are many different ways to communicate and writing on these forums on only one of those methods.
I am sorry to hear that there has been a lack of communication and I am pleased that Anne Fitzsimons has taken steps to correct this.
I would advise any other member with difficulty in getting through to the right person to phone the switchboard of the IET or send an e-mail.
All the contacts are available on the following web page.
http://www.theiet.org/about/contacts/index.cfm
I hope that further efforts are being made to enhance the level of communication between the IET HQ and the membership of the IET and for there to be a department contactable by phone outside office hours to respond to matters like the one raised here.
I believe that this is a key step for the IET to take before it can call itself global.
All the best

David,
I agree with you however HO need to realise that if we are to be a world-wide body, they must address themselves to emails on such topics because many putative members cannot telephone during UK working hours because of the time zone and also telephoning to the UK can be dreadfully expensive from some of these countries.
That is why, when - in desperation as this man - they post here I respond as I did and also use the "Moderator" button to ask that they alert the relevant department to the post.
The apparent lack of response, and my reply, do not, however, call for such language as in the 14:07 post from him

Mr. Nuckchady has posted his problem on 26 June 2008.
His application will affect his promotion and therefore he was very disappointed when no response was received.
In order for IET to deliver a good service to potential members we need to provide better response than a usual nominal email address.
Since Anne has picked up the issue we hope his case can be quickly dealt with.
I will suggest that key staff of IET be easily reachable through emails and make their email addresses available to all.
I strongly object to the language or choice of words used to voice one's frustration.
However I occasionally noticed sarcastic remarks which are uncalled for.
Let us all become wiser and I certainly look forward to more efficient delivery system from the staff of IET.
The above issue need not surface at the CES level.
Regards
Chris Chew

I strongly believe that onyone using offensive language on these forums should be prevented from becomming a Chartered Engineer.
Communication is a vital skill that an engineer should have.
Using insulting language is not really going to help the IET become better.
Using insulting language is not going to encourage the staff of the IET to be more responsive and helpful.
We as engineers should encourage the use of polite communication whatever the circumstances may be.
This is in keeping with reasonable ethical practices that engineers should be promoting.
Frustration is no excuse.
Using insulting language is just going to close more doors and remove opportunities and the frustration will get worse in the long run.
Mr.
Nuckchady should post an apology for his poor communication skills and the IET HQ should post an apology for their delay in responding to him.
Perhaps then we can put this issue to rest and move forward.
Kind regards

Very well put. I would just add a couple of things:
To 'Chartered Engineer' I would add 'or Incorporated Engineer, EngTech, or just plain member of a professional engineering body'.
The other point is that during a professional career there will be many many times when customers, suppliers, or partner organisations do not perform in the way that we would like them to from our point of view.
Dealing with this professionally, including dealing with our own frustrations, is one of the essential skills required of a professional engineer.
Part of this is understanding the contractual relationship (did the IET contract to respond in a certain period of time?), part of it is down to pure negotiating skills.
And part of it is even knowing when to cancel a relationship - the 'win-win or no deal' strategy.
Sometimes being firm and determined is required to solve problems effectively.
Getting angry never helps.
