Idol Wild: Archuleta "Crushes" Cook on Charts Thu., Aug.

21, 2008 12:15 PM PDT by David Jenison source: http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/marc_malki...es_cook_on.html David Cook topped David Archuleta in their American Idol showdown, but now the little D has gotten some extra-large revenge. The 17-year-old Archuleta's "Crush" has debuted at No.

2 on the Hot 100 singles chart, besting the No.

3 opening of Cook's "The Time of My Life" in June. In fact, Archuleta just netted the biggest bow since Fall Out Boy's "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" also debuted at No.

2 back in January 2007. Archuleta is the first runner-up to outperform the reigning champ since the head-to-head matchup between Clay Aiken's "This Is the Night" and season-two victor Ruben Studdard's "Flying Without Wings." Aiken topped Studdard with what became the best-selling single of 2003. "Crush" is the biggest bow by an Idol contestant for a song never performed on the show—in comparison, his show single "Imagine" actually underperformed with a No.

36 debut. Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" is the only other nondebut single by an Idol contestant to reach as high as the No.

2 spot. While Archuleta now claims the higher Hot 100 debut, Cook's "The Time of My Life" did better in the download department, selling 236,000 digital copies in its opening week to 166,000 copies for "Crush." Cook also set a SoundScan-era record that first week, when 11 of his songs cracked the Hot 100, topping Miley Cyrus' record of six.

Only the Beatles have charted more songs at once with 14 spots back in '64. Unfortunately for Cook, his No.

3 peak for "Time" also made him just the second Idol champ whose big-moment single failed to open in one of the top two spots.

(Jordin Sparks missed the mark as well with a tepid No.

15 bow for "This Is My Now.") Next up, the two Davids will go mano a mano in November, when both their albums are tentatively scheduled for release. Idol wars notwithstanding, Rihanna's "Disturbia" was the big chart news, nailing down the No.

1 slot on the singles chart for a second straight week, while her previous chart topper, "Take a Bow," rose to No.

1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. In other Hot 100 news, Taylor Swift's "Change" sold 131,000 digital downloads for a No.

10 debut, making it her highest-charting single and the first top 10 entry of her young career.

"Change," which will also appear on her forthcoming Fearless album, leads five song debuts from the AT&T Team USA compilation. While Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" hasn't been released as a digital single, the faceless Hit Masters cover version debuted at No.

65 this week on 37,000 downloads.

The Kid's version, meanwhile, climbed three spots to No.

25 on airplay alone. Making news on the other charts, Coldplay scored its first Modern Rock chart topper with "Viva la Vida."

May 4th judge na sa AI!

Interesting... Idol's New Judge Kara DioGuardi: "I'm a Lucky, Lucky Girl"Put to rest the notions of an American Idol shakeup, Kara DioGuardi told reporters during a conference call Monday, hours after FOX announced that the songwriter and producer will join the show as a judge.

DioGuardi, a music industry powerhouse, has penned and produced hits for Celine Dion, Kelly Clarkson and Christina Aguilera (to name a few).

She will meet up for the first time with Idol’s original judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul on Tuesday for the New York auditions of the upcoming season, which will air on FOX in January 2009. Does Abdul, Idol’s lone female for seven seasons, feel threatened?

DioGuardi doesn’t think so. “I haven’t spoken to her.

I would think she’d be excited,” DioGuardi said, noting that she and Abdul collaborated on the Kylie Minogue hit “Spinning Around” in 2000. Fans who were surprised with the announcement that Idol will add another judge are not alone.

“I almost fell off the chair,” DioGuardi said of hearing from the show’s producers, who approached her for the gig and are hoping to create “a new chemistry as well as keeping the old” with the expansion of the judges’ panel. DioGuardi told reporters she doesn’t know where she’ll sit or how four judges will break a tie during the auditions. “I’m a little nervous,” admitted DioGuardi, who said her approach to judging is simple.

“I’m going to be a straight shooter and say it like I see it and maintain that philosophy.” So is she more of a Paula or a Simon?

“I’m somebody who’s really honest and gives an opinion,” she said.

“If I feel I need to be hard, I will be.

And if I feel I need to be more nurturing, I will be.” One thing DioGuardi will have to get used to is being recognized.

While she’s known as one of the best in the music business, “I’m not a household name,” she said.

“I’m putting some money into buying some makeup.” – Monica Rizzo http://tvwatch.people.com/2008/08/2...cky-lucky-girl/

David Archuleta's 'Crush' is surprisingly good! Aug 4, 2008, 10:27 AM | by Michael Slezak Categories: 'American Idol', Music I was not a huge fan of David Archuleta during his tenure on American Idol's seventh season.

Sure, as Randy Jackson reminded us (over and over and over), the kid could "sing the phone book," but frankly, a weekly rundown of surnames and seven-digit numbers would've been more interesting (and more contemporary) than the array of drippy, "big issues" ballads the Utah teenager favored on his way to a runner-up finish. With that in mind, though, I'm glad none of my PopWatch colleagues weighed in on David's first post-Idol single, "Crush," which premiered on Elvis Duran's Z100 morning show Friday morning (while I was enjoying a day off at the Jersey shore), because much to my surprise, it's actually pretty good.

I was worried the folks at 19 might saddle David with the kind of bland, soul-crushing production that sent former Idol runners-up like Bo Bice and Diana DeGarmo directly to the bargain bin (without passing go, or collecting a followup major-label release), but "Crush" sounds hip and contemporary.

The chorus alone is prettier than a window box of pink petunias, with an epic sweep that evokes waves crashing, thunder rolling, and herds of horses galloping through lush fields -- exactly what a song about the early pangs of teenage romance should do.

The lyrics, like a lot of today's top 40 fare, won't win a Pulitzer for poetry, but they won't make you wince, either.

(Side note: On my first few listens to "Crush," I was wrongly convinced the last line of the chorus -- "Do you ever think/When you're all alone/All that we could be/Where this thing could go" -- was "Where this sneaker go.") And David adroitly walks the line between giving his core fans their fill of vocal runs while showing enough restraint that he won't automatically alienate non-Idol-loving listeners.

In other words, I'm convinced "Crush" (embedded below) is good news for David (a charming kid, as you can see by clicking here and here for the interview I did with him a couple months back), for his fans, and for the general health of the Idol franchise.

What say you, PopWatchers? http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2008/08/da...rprisingly+good!

Exclusive Interview: David Archuleta's 'Crush' tops charts 02:27 PM PT, Aug 21 2008 “All my friends keep saying, ‘You should try to hook up with Shawn Johnson,’” confessed “American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta with a giggle. It was 11:45 a.m.

On Thursday, and Archuleta had managed to squeeze in a quick chat between signing autographs and walking a press line in Tampa, Fla. Our topic of conversation –- Archuleta’s real-life crushes – was prompted by the outlandish success of his first single, “Crush.” Not only was it the top-selling digital download of the week, but “Crush” also hit No.

2 on the U.S. pop singles chart today;

The best chart debut in 18 months, according to Billboard. So, I just had to ask: Does Archuleta have a “Crush” of his own?

“I’m just afraid to mention anything now,” confessed Archuleta.

And he’s right to be afraid.

Recently, after one of Archuleta’s female friends attended his show, she received a deluge of hate mail from Archuleta’s fans.

“They said, ‘You’re not good enough for him, and you’re ugly,” Archuleta said, shuddering.

“You can see why people want to keep things to themselves.” Despite the fact that his rabid fans harassed his guest, however, Archuleta continued to defend them.

“They’re just really protective,” he concluded. It was one of Archuleta’s loyal fans, in fact, who first informed him of his chart-topping success.

“She told me and I was like, ‘Are you serious?’ ” Archuleta recalled.

He never dreamed his first single would debut at No.

2. “I was like, maybe it will get to the top 40.

I just can’t believe it.” The single came about somewhat serendipitously.

“It was actually the first song that the label played for us to listen to,” Archuleta said.

“They played just a rough demo of it, and I was just like, ‘wow.’ ” After singing so many mature ballads on “American Idol,” Archuleta was drawn to “Crush” for its youthful edge.

Above all, Archuleta wanted to avoid coming off as too adult;

Or, as he put it, as “some cheesy version of Josh Groban.” In his upcoming album, too, Archuleta is looking for a young sound.

So far, he knows the album will be pop-based, and that it will hit stores in late fall.

“We only have a month and a half to work on it!” he said.

“We're just looking for the best songs we can find in the shortest amount of time.” Plus, since he’s still on the “American Idol” tour, Archuleta is recording the entire album in his nonexistent free time.

“I used to have days off, but now when I have a day off, I have to just work on the album,” he said.

Somehow, however, he isn’t stressed about his grueling schedule.

“I don't feel overwhelmed or anything.

I’m finally living my dream.” Archuleta couldn’t reveal much about his music video for “Crush,” except to say that it involved –- you guessed it –- a “crush.” “I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it,” Archuleta said of the video shoot, adding, “I can’t wait to see how the end product comes out!” One of the reasons Archuleta enjoyed shooting the video so much may have been his affection for the actress playing his crush.

“She’s really funny.

Like, she acted a lot like me,” Archuleta said, laughing.
