Rhodes forum: snorkelling in Rhodes - TripAdvisor
I will be going to Rhodes in August.
Does anyone know of any good snorkelling spots, particularly around the Old Town (Rodos Town)?
I have my own snorkelling equipment.
Thanks!

Hi there
The water is so clear and clean all around the coast that you can snorkel pretty much anywhere.
The waters are full of fish and many of the beaches have quite a gentle shelf.
Diving however is a different thing;
It is strictly regulated on Rhodes with just the one diving site at Kallithea, on the east coast just south of Rhodes Town.

You can on some beaches although if you are going to spend your time snorkelling, why not buy a set of flippers and a mask at a beach shop?
You'll end up saving money rather than hiring each time.
AS long as you don't insist on top class gear, you can get a pair of flippers for maybe 15 euros and a mask for around 8-10 euros .
And at the end of your holiday, you can always leave them behind if they are too big to pack.

Thanks, GB.
Are there any colorful fish?
Can you give me an idea of what types of fish and other sea creatures I might expect to encounter?
Also, are there any ancient sites that I could snorkel over--I have read that this is possible on some of the Greek isles.

Thanks, Jamkart.
Can you give me an idea of what types of fish or other sea creatures I might sea at Anthony Quinn Bay and is there any type of "entrance" fee?
(I have read that there is a beach charge at some of the beaches in Greece.
) Also, is Anthony Quinn Bay easily accessible by city bus?

A great way to see Ladiko and Anthony Quinn Bay is to arrive by boat.
The best way of doing this is to charter one of the crewed sailing yachts from Madraki Harbour in Rhodes Town.
This will cost you a few hundred euros for the day but is well worth it - especially if you take a few friends along.
Discuss with the skipper what you want to do and he will sail you to some of the best, often deserted, places for snorkelling and swimming.
Light lunch and drinks are usually included in the price.
We've done this a couple of times (most recently 3 years ago), the first was on an old wooden boat called "Vikings" - the skipper is a real character (we will always remember him muttering "bloody bast@rd fish" in his broken english as his spear gun failed to reach its target for the umpteenth time!), the second was on a more modern GRP boat called "Estelle" - we later found out that Estelle was owned by the son of the old chap who took us out on Vikings.
Sailing on these boats is amongst our moost memorable experiences on Rhodes and once our son is old enough we will be doing it again.
Simply walk along Mandraki Harbour, the boats that are available for private charter will have notice boards out, find one you like the look of and negotiate a price.
Enjoy,
Dave.

The seas at Kalithea and Ladico are in sheltered bays therefore the water is usually calm and crystal clear.
Cannot recall the type of fish but there did not appear to be a many different fish when I snorkelled in these areas but I did not venture out far from the rocky coast.
