Denver forum: Denver and Rocky Mountain National Park - TripAdvisor
I'm planning a first time drip to the Denver area.
Being a city girl, I'd like to get out into nature for the four days that I'll be there.
It seems to me that my best bet is the Rocky Mountain State Park.
Does anyone have any recommendations for outdoorsy things to do in the Denver area for a long weekend?
Thanks!

Yes, Estes Park/RMNP is a good idea.
Summit County as well (Breckendridge/Frisco/Vail)
(or split time between them).
You could also head a bit southwest to BuenaVista/Salida area for rafting, etc.
(a little bit longer to get there)
What time are you coming?
(not sure if you are talking about next week or next summer :))

Will you have a car?
If not, then a shuttle to Summit County including Breckenridge, Keystone, Frisco etc will be your best bet.
There are free buses in that area to take you places.
If you are renting a car, then RMNP is a great place, possibly with a night in Denver or Boulder too.

We (me and two friends) will be going the second week of October, we'll have 4 days in the area and I was thinking about only staying in Denver for a night on either end.
We'd like to spend most of our time in the mountains, but we'll be flying in and out of Denver, so we'll be spending two nights there.
We'll have a car, but we don't want to do too much driving because one of our friends (the one with the car) is driving 6 hours from Albuquerque to meet us in Denver.
Does anyone have any experience camping in the park?
And recommendations for some favorite spots, or favorite (inexpensive) lodges in the park?

2nd week in October will be getting too cold for camping, but if you have all the right gear, you should be ok, unless it snows!
Only Moraine Park CG is open in mid Oct.
Visit www.nps.gov/romo for more information.
There are no lodges inside the park, so Estes Park is it.
You may also want to look at RV Parks in Estes, many have small cabins with heat, no bathroom tho.

I didn't think it would be that cold already!
Well I suppose we'll stay in Estes Park and do day trips into the park then.
Thanks for all the info!
