Hockey Elite League (thats british ice hockey) - Total War Center Forums

Does anyone from britain follow ice hockey?

(elite league not NHL) i only know whats going on because my home town have the best team in the country and its quite a big deal because we suck at all other sports anyway, looks like coventry blaze are on course for a third championship title in a row but the challenge cup looks beyond our grasp, ah well 2 in 4 years isn't bad. i now expect this thread to die a death...

Sometimes I hear whats going on with the Belfast Giants.

But I don't really follow it.

How big is hockey in the isles?

Given the weather, I would've thought it'd be rather popular sport.

UK has hockey?

Ive never heard anyone mention Hockey and the UK in the same sentence.

Go figure.

Go figure. Ouch, guys, that hurt.

We won the Olympic Gold in 1936.

Amazing, but true. It's not widely covered on TV/media but it does exist, barely, due to financial constraints. Anyway Gary88 my local team is Sheffield Steelers, they used to be very good but they seem to struggle now.

About all they hit the headlines for in the last few years was fighting with Nottingham. There was a move to build a rink in Leeds and have a team there but it has died a death.

Pity as it's much more convenient to travel 10 rather than 40 miles.

Newcastle Vipers sometimes get exposure on my local news program, but that's about it.

British hockey kinda sucks because theres no fighting.

Fighting is just a bonus.

Not a big part of the game. Old NHL fighters has actually played in British Isles.

I know it should get TV coverage, it seems the sort of thing the BBC should pick up because it wont cost a huge amount and they never have the money to compete with sky on major sports like football. @Paggers yeah sheffield used to be big challengers to the Blaze but that seems to have died away recently its a big shame. Not big, the UK has mild weather, the gulf stream keeps us reasonable in winter and relatively cool in summer and damned wet all year.

We don't get big frozen lakes though so to do ice hockey you have to go to ice rinks which are few and far between and always expensive, there is almost no junior set up so only the best of the best kids get any sort of serious competition. Its a bit of a disgrace that Britains oldest and greatest most successful team, the Fife Flyers are not in the league. The Flyers have won more trophys than any over team and has beaten every other team in the elite superleague, I believe the Sheffield Steelers have never actually won against the Flyers. The flyers have been asked to join the league every year since its inception but continually refuse becuase they hate all the politics and moneyhatting that goes on.
