Smokies NP, Overmountain Trail, Shenandoah NP, Harpers Ferry, C&O Canal, Delaware Water Gap are all under the National Park Service.
White Mountain, Green Mountain, George Washington, Jefferson, Nantahala, Cherokee, the one near Damascus and the one in Georgia whose names I forget are National Forests.
Mount Rodgers and Chatahooche(?)?

Chattahoochee.

No, I just remembered Mt Rogers NRA is actually Washington and Jefferson.
Pisgah NF, I think.

Perv... Hey now, there's no NAMBLA membership here.

In addition to Parks & Forests of National, State, & County jurisdiction, the AT goes through one National Wildlife Refuge: Wallkill River NWR in NJ.
And that's a good thing.
And remember, the AT is a national park itself

From south to north, the National Forests are:
Chattahoochee-Oconee
Nantahala
Pisgah
Cherokee
Jefferson
George Washington
Green Mountain
White Mountain
The trail passes through two National Parks:
Great Smoky Mountains
Shenandoah
The trail also passes over other entities that are technically not National Parks, but are administered by the National Park Service:
Harpers Ferry National Historical Park
Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park
Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area
The AT itself is not a National Park.
It is the "Appalachian National Scenic Trail" and it is administered by the National Park Service.
The differences between some of these entities may not be obvious to the average user, but they are real legal differences.
For instance, if you call 911 on the trail in PA, no federal agent is going to respond (except in the DWGNRA).
Alligator's article is great, but sometimes TMI.

That doesn't add up to 6.
You forgot the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail.
Which the AT crosses near Overmountain Shelter.
