Dismal Swamp - Bigfoot Forums

Alright so I read the other night.

Of a well known Cryptozoologist out here in The Great Dismal Swamp.

Looking for the Dismal Swamp Monster.

Which from reports seems to have the notorious characteristics of Bigfoot.

Any thoughts on this matter?

I haven't been able to dig too much up sadly.

I've heard all kinds of things abotu our Swamp but nothing abot ua bigfoot in specific.

When I find it, I'll post a link of a report in 2000 on a camp out there. I have heard of NAPES as far as NC but nothing like this in VA here.

I'm so excited!!!! ~Tark~

Http://www.bfro.net/GDB/show_report.asp?id=4788 http://paranormal.about.com/od/othercreatu...l+Swamp+Monster The first is a report from 2000 that seems somewhat descriptive of sounds etc.

The second link is The man whos on The Dismal Swamp Monster search. ~Tark~

How close do you live to the swamp? If I was close, Id get my ass out there and put up a couple of trail cams and some food bait. This post has been edited by Robert: May 6 2007, 08:14 AM

Its just a city over.

I don't know the area well enoguh to go do that.

Nor do I have the equipment.

If Anythign I'd arm myself with a camera in case Isaw anythign and perhaps a nonlethal weapon of some sort and wonder around out there.

And film anything and record anything out of the ordinary. ~Tark~

OK. Do that. Once you have been out there a few times you might get a better idea of where to put a trail cam, or some bait. Let us know what you see, take pictures and post some here. Even if you don't see or hear anything out of the ordinary, we still want to know about the area.

The Great Dismal Swamp is an awesome piece of (sort of) wilderness on the Atlantic Coastal Plain.

Hazards at this time of year include ticks, canebrake rattlesnakes, and the Dismal Swamp Southeastern Shrew.

("That's no ordinary shrew!

He'll bite your head off!") But, years ago when I frequented that area, there were persistent rumors that the Swamp was where the VDGIF released the "problem bears" that they had to remove from the Shenandoah National Park.

The idea was to place these bears - that had no more fear of humans - someplace where they'd be unlikely to encounter humans.

As far as rumors go, I found this one pretty plausible, so just be on your guard with the bears down there.

I am well knowledgeable of Bears.

They'd be my least of concerns.

Snakes would be my primary issue.

Anyone know anything abotu rumors?

I haven't heard anything lately.

Quote: ("That's no ordinary shrew!

He'll bite your head off!") RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY!!!!! God love Monty Python

Bear usualyl are too lazy to run anyways.

That and I think a good smack on the snout would send them the other way! ~Tark~

A good smack on the snout? What if its one of those bears NOT wearing a muzzle? Bears can get very hungry, and become unpredictable, even blackies...

If it's legal, carry a side arm, a big bore, like a .45 or 44 mag.

Better to kill one psycho bear that's trying to eat your head and write a letter of apology to Game and Fish later. This post has been edited by Robert: May 9 2007, 05:43 AM

The Great Dismal Swamp is in fact one of the places where the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries would relocae its problem bears.

I know of 3 taken from a camp a couple of years ago and they were all headed there.

When it comes to bear relocation VDGIF doesn't play around they are moved hours away.

Some going to one side of the state others to the opposite.

But it is not like we have a huge bear/human problem and bears are being relocated every day. As far as smacking one on the snout.

A couple of years ago I was charged by a very large black bear and I didn't realize he was charging me until he was about 10 feet from me.

I am convinced that the only thing that saved me was the fact that it was too late for me to run and I stood my ground.

As far as for whacking him on the nose goes, good luck with that one.

Get a gun because if you run into one of the "problem" bears that VDGIF has relocated and he has no fear of man there may be some nose whacking going on.

Too bad you will be the whackee and not the whacker.

Good luck I have always been convinced that if BF is anywhere in VA he is in the GD Swamp.

Umm the GD standing for Great Dismal.

Awww but I wanna smack bear snouts!!!

>.< Joking aside I would be armed for sure.

The Swamp I beleive may hold what these reports show as perhaps a BF.

I wouldn't mind scoping it out at all!

Hello--- I live in Suffolk which borders the Dismal Swamp.

I have been down there researching a few times.

I went in at the Washington ditch gate.

We think we might have gotten some answers to some woodknocks but it could have been researchers on the other side of the swamp.

BTW a recent bear hunt turned up no bears.hhhhmm how does that happen.

They are closing the free boat accessible campground in June due to the inability to reach it during emergencies. ---Aleta

My sighting was near the Dismal swamp I live in Virginia, but the sighting was in North Carolina.

YEAR: 1982 SEASON: Fall MONTH: October STATE: North Carolina COUNTY: Pasquatank County LOCATION DETAILS: Pasquatank County NC and the property was on/near the Pasquatank River, near Elizabeth City and the Great Dismal Swamp.

NEAREST TOWN: Elizabeth City TIME AND CONDITIONS: About 9 am ENVIRONMENT: Semi rural area.

The area is woodlands, along with some swamps.

Deer and other various types of wildlife frequent these areas.

The Atlantic Ocean is only a few miles away.

OBSERVED: I wanted to let you know about a sighting of Bigfoot I had in North Carolina.

It happened in 1982, I was about 18 at the time of the sighting.

It was in the fall, in October. First of all, I should start by letting you know I am what you would call a city boy.

Scared and out of place in the woods.

A friend of mine invited me to go Deer hunting with his father and him on a large parcel of private property they owned in North Carolina.

I'm willing to try anything, so I went.

This Property was set back away from the closest road about a 1/2 mile on foot, before you even got to the cabins they owned.

These cabins were on stilts, like a beach house about 10 feet high, with stairs.

For what reason, I have no idea, although we were next to a small inland waterway. At about 5am in the morning we proceeded to go hunting, we walked about a half hour with my friends taking me to my deer stand and moving on to theirs.

This deer stand was about 10 feet high in a tree with camouflaged covering.

I did see many deer and a black bear that day, but I didn't have the heart to shoot them. I guess at about 9 am My sighting began with a bad smell.

It smelled worse than a dog that had been playing in a sewer.

Then I heard it before I saw it, snapping twigs or branches as it walked, at first I thought it was my friend and his dad, come to rescue me from this ordeal.

I only saw it from the waist up, from a distance of about 50 yards.

And if It knew I was there, It didn't care.

It stood in one spot for a good 5 minutes eating leaves or berries, so I got a good look at it.

Having seen a bear earlier that day there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY this could be a case of mistaken identity.

This creature had hands like a human, that plucked the berries it was eating and it looked very fussy about the ones it wanted.

The hands looked dark in color and relatively hairless except the back of the hand was hairy.

It looked to be about 8 foot tall, and just unbelievably massive in the chest and shoulder areas.

Its fur was very dark black in color.

I only caught a glimpse of its face, as its back was to me, and it looked hairy except around the eyes.

The neck was short and stubby with a kind of furry ridge that ran up the back of the neck, to the top of what looked like a slightly pointed head that sloped down to the forehead, like a gorilla I saw in the DC zoo. When I lost sight of it I could still hear it crunch sticks and leaves as it walked on its way for about 5 more minutes.

Needless to say I was so scared I almost Pee’d my self waiting quietly for my friends to come save me.

When they arrived, I told them the story, and of course they thought it was a bear.

I haven't told this story to many people, because of the ridicule I received from them.

Cool report, John You should repost your sighting report as a "new post" when you can, under Sightings & Encounters.

Interesting for sure. Did you see the face well enough to compare it to any of the various drawings online?

When It did turn for me to be able to get a quick look, I was also really scared and may have ducked down to make sure it didnt see me.

I was only 17 and very frightened.

I remember that the face was also hair covered except around the eyes and that the eyes looked to be a dark color. This post has been edited by JohnCartwright: Sep 5 2007, 02:59 PM

Great sighting report, John.

If I was ever to get the chance to see BF, I think I would prefer to be hiding 10 ft.

Up in a deer blind...

But I'd still be plenty freaked, for sure!

I just went and Googled the great Dismal Swamp....mostly because I was curious if it really was called that.

Cool name for such a place, and definitely looks like a likely place to find the big guy.

Hope any of you that go out looking have some good luck and let us know what you find....and don't run into those "bears with 'tudes!"

The swamps in connecticut & new england probley can be temperary areas for sasquatch creatures to prowl around with other wildlife.

Thats my opinion.

Good morning bill green

WOW John, thanks alot for sharing that encounter.

I still to this day think there's something to getting up in a tree stand and seeing these creatures.

There are alot of sightings from tree stands.

Thanks so much for sharing your sighting.

John, I have read several other sighting reports that mention hunters in tree stands.

There are some on the Texas group website and I've seen more on other sites.

Very interesting to say the least.

Makes me think about getting a tree stand for survelliance.

Quote: Interesting, there has been other sightings from Deer blinds? Yes, there have.

One of the best was the one where the hunter said he watched a female bf hunt a wild pig -- going from tree to tree to hide, then pouncing on the pig, slamming it against a tree to kill it, then she stopped and noticed him in the tree stand.

They locked eyes for a few minutes, then she picked up the hog and walked off through the woods.

He was scared sh*tless. I don't remember where I read that one, sorry.

I was so glad that the one I saw did not see me.(That I know of) I was so scared I thought I was going to die from fright.

I even had a gun and it didnt matter! Quote: John, I have read several other sighting reports that mention hunters in tree stands.

Here in Virginia?

I would be too scared, I almost crapped my pants when I saw one. Those things look like they could snap me in half! Be carefull! John

Here's one report from a hunter in a tree stand.

I live close to this area and I've talked to the guy who made this report (from the names he mentions, I put 2 and 2 together and just asked the guy if it was him and he admitted it was). http://www.gcbro.com/ARuni002.html

I have not yet visited the Dismal Swamp area though.

I really want to one day when I get the chance.

I have heard alot of good things about that area.

Two of my son's had a sighting of a creature sometime back and it effected their lives too (although they won't admit it ). Jaylee, Josh might get mad at me for that last comment, huh?

Yep Billy, but after having a sighting, it can't help but affect your life.

This man was as scared as I was, now I dont feel like such a wimp. Thanks for making me feel better JayleeD

Hey John, Here's the one that Robert mentioned: http://www.bfro.net/GDB/show_report.asp?id=8547 Alan

Hey Guys, I went to the Dismal yesterday down the Washington Ditch.

My husband and I did some wooodknocks.

I got some answers way far off.

They were in a series of four.

I usually do three knocks 'cause I heard them in the woods back of Courtland VA but the ones that answered me yesterday were in a series of four.

You can't call blast in the Swamp, it's illegal. Once we started hitting the trees the park rangers kept coming around.

I talked to one of the park rangers at great length.

I asked him about the bears this year and he said they were prevalent and that there will be another hunt.

He said something strange.

He said that the yearling bears look like gorillas.

Why would he say that?

I did not discuss Bigfoot at all.

That is such a strange thing to say.

They don't look at all like gorillas to me.

When I asked him twice if he had seen anything weird in the Swamp he looked down the path and said no.

I asked him again later on in the conversation he looked down the path again and said no.

We saw a mink and a bobcat.

We saw something else but it was too far away to distinquish.

The boardwalk shows a lot of bear damage but no bears to be found. It is nice down at the swamp these days.

Stay on the path it is extremely dangerous.

It looks safe but off the path it's dangerous. ---Aleta

{I don't mean that the way it sounds.} Your sighting - and one from Chesapeake near Bunch Walnuts Rd [ http://www.bfro.net/GDB/show_report.asp?id=4788 ] - are the only two in the GDS vicinity I know of. {And yes, it really is called "Bunch Walnuts Rd".

I don't know HOW it got the name, only that that IS the name.} I live outside Elizabeth City, which is about 20[?] miles south of the southern border of the GDS.

However, I didn't move here until 1995. -Allan, aka RocKiteman N.E.
