KVR: Field recordings

Wondering... how does one get into field recordings for documentaries, such as lets say africa.

What mics do you use?

You record on laptop or go to DAT or some sort of standalone recorder with better battery life?

Has anyone done such work?

How does one record under water?

How would one record whales?

How about capturing the spatial information of lets say a safari recording? How about underwater?? see this link with with sample recordings of fish!

OHhh..listen to these seals!

Apparently making sounds between 0.1Khz and 70Khz! http://scilib.ucsd.edu/sio/nsf/fguide/seal1.wav

With field recorders, special mics for each occasion, and certainly not a laptop!---- We are the KVR collective.

Resistance is futile.

You will be assimilated.

Hi, you can check these sites out. http://www.quietamerican.org/index.html http://www.chriswatson.net/---- "“When we separate music from life we get art." John Cage

There are special field recorders available, and they aren't usually cheap.

There are special microphones available also, and they aren't cheap either. While you're saving your money for the expensive gear, if you just want to dabble a little in underwater recording for now, you might be interested in this: Do-It-Yourself Hyrdophone Plans I haven't built one yet, but it looks interesting. For starters, I would suggest doing google searches on the following terms: "Field Recorders" "Field Microphones" "Shotgun Microphones" "Parabolic Microphones" "Hydrophones" "Geophones" ..then again, you probably already have. take care, McLilith

Also check here for tips: http://www.phonography.org/gear.htm----

If you just want to f**k around above water, then a minidisc recording kit would work just as well.

I've used it to do field recording, and the quality is good enough.---- Have you been huffing paint or something? -WR

Hey..thanks for those links....interesting field...if only i had more time to actually try it out...
