Speaking of goats... goats for clearing land? - MotheringDotCommune Forums
Are there any goat experts in the house?
We bought a foreclosed property and moved in in late May.
I don't know how long it's been since somebody mowed.
We've been working on the yard for weeks (between working on the inside, which is likewise in need of great help!) but our backyard is like a jungle.
We have probably 2000 sq feet of back yard covered in grass, blackberries and weeds, about 3-4' tall.
It's awful, and we can't seem to make headway.
So anyhow, on Craigslist this morning I see an add for goat rental.
$25/goat/week. Up to 8 goats.
I'm wondering if 8 goats for a week would take care of my backyard problem...
Because really, 8 goats is cheaper than replacing my mower and weed whacker when they both die of overuse.
And would 8 goats be loud enough to piss off my new neighbors?
(And is 8 too many goats??)

Are you serious? I'm so renting my goats out!
Yeah, they can clean it up pretty fast, we have 3 that took about a month on around an acre.
I'd just clean up anything you don't want them to eat.
My goats don't make any noise at all but they're completely crazy too.

We're in WA. too the blackberries are crazy!!!
We bought 2 goats in may.
They were just little guys we gave them a little milk supplement, bought collars ang 6ft.
Chains and staked them out.
We put them in the barn everynight.
They cleared an area out so well that dh fenced that part in and went and bought two weaner pigs.
They will root up all the dirt as well as the stumps and then we can seed w/pasture mix.
They definately paid for themselves.
We just keep moving them.
I would definealy get two instead of one.
The only time we hear them is when we put them in the barn at night.
We put them away 1 at a time and the other one will cry until you come for him.
We bought them for 17.50 each.
We will sell back in nov.
For over 100 dollars.
Highly rec. goats!

Yes, our goats cleared what we thought was unclearable land, and it only took two of them.
We intensively rotated them, so they were very happy.
They are friendly, personable animals, and very smart.
Make sure your fencing is really good, and make sure you can get water to them easily.
We had a portable shelter that we moved around for them, which they liked, but I'm not sure it's necessary.

Thanks for the feedback!
We went ahead and rented 5 goats...
Got them Sunday and they're supposed to stay 'til Saturday.
So far so good!
