Backflips - NeoGAF
Can anyone here do a backflip?
I'm thinking of making this my next major life goal, but still kinda scared of wrecking myself.
I probably have the right body type for it, small but decent strength-to-weight.
Is it best to start of something high, onto something soft?

I could when I was young.
There's nothing to it, except to spring up and commit.
And yes, try a pool first.
Same principle. Lip of pool into water is about 12 inches.
So you know what the marging of error is.
Spin fast and use your head as an centrifuge.

It's pretty easy to do a standing back.
Just don't turn your head to the side, and don't throw it back, you want it in a neutral position the entire time
|
 |
|
I have done like a ton in gymnastic gyms, on just the regular floor, but I'm terrified of doing it on grass.
|
 |
One day, i decided to try a backflip and landed it
a year later, i can barely land it
what happen :<
start off on something soft.
Be ready to extend your arm and protect your neck if something goes wrong.
its mostly in the arms, i believe.
Just swing them forward and toss your body backward (?)
the hell do i know how to explain it, i can barely do them anymore.
:(

Don't give the tired act, after you been running 'round
The time you spend with me, you shouldn't be coming down.
Don't give me no attitude, saying what you will and will not do
Baby we need compromise, if we're gonna make it through.
Push yourself a little more boy
For me you gotta try a little harder
All I do is for the love of you
Show me you're always gonna be there
No matter what you're always gonna be there
Here's what you gotta do...
[Chorus]
I wanna see ya Backflip
Cartwheel
Don't be cutting corners on me
Gotta give me all that you've got
I need to see it to believe it
I wanna see ya Backflip
for real
Show me that you really
Do feel, everything you say that
You do
I need to see it to believe it.
[Verse 2]
Don't bring me no baggage cause, I've got plenty of my own
Bring me all your good stuff, baby leave the rest at home
You've got your own philosophy, wanna hear all that you believe
But if it ain't about being faithful
Then it ain't impressing me
Push yourself a little more boy
For me you gotta try a little harder
All I do is for the love of you
Show me you're always gonna be there
No matter what you're always gonna be there
Here's what you gotta do...
[Chorus Repeat]
[Bridge Chorus:]
I would walk (walk), run (run), jump (jump), cart (cart) wheel (wheel) back (back) flip (flip)
Just to be with you
There's nothing I won't do
Gonna walk (walk), run (run), jump (jump), cart (cart) wheel (wheel) back (back) flip (flip)
Just to be with you
There's nothing I won't do
I wanna see you Backflip

Jump straight up as high as you can with your arms in the air.
At the peak of your ascent, pull your knees into your chest, and let angular motion do the rest.
If you jump at an angle or lean forward or backward, you'll probably break your neck, so keep that in mind.
It's best to learn with someone who knows how to do a backflip.
That person can guide you through the process and help you spin your first few times (usually they'll maintain the axis that you spin around by holding you accordingly).

Doing them on trampolines is pretty easy;
Doing them flatland is not so much.
Here's a trick to learning backflips off the ground -- back handsprings!
Learn back handsprings and a full backflip is an evolutionary step, rather than a revolutionary one.
When I could do them I'd run at a good speed and then cartwheel into a backflip, carrying the momentum from the run/cartwheel.
You do back handsprings in the same way (cartwheel to bhs).

I do backflips, flares, windmill kicks, donkey punches, fly kites and all those wild things.
*breakdances in this thread*
imo
|
 |
I used to be able to do one off a wall/tree when I was younger, now all I can do is a front or back handspring, or one into a pool, but who can't?
I did try at the beach but to no avail.
I'd land on my knees every time.

I just want to do a handstand and you guys are already doing backflips.
Oy.
btw, any tips for doing handstands?

I taught myself as a kid by doing it between doors and narrow hallways.
That way if I lost balance, I could quickly stop falling and immediately go back to balancing.
Backflips are easier than handstands, though.
They're just more dangerous to screw up.

 |
You jump up...Not back.
Used to be able do them a year or so ago, since I was in gymnastics.
Not much need to do them anymore

I think any reasonably athletic person can do a backflip.
It's more a matter of getting over the fear of falling on your head/neck/face

I've wanted to do a backflip my entire life, but haven't been able to get over this.
I've run and done forward flips into the grass numerous times until I got that down, but I've never been able to even attempt a backflip on a solid surface.
|
 |
Believe it or not, they aren't that hard.
Definitely try on a trampoline or mattress the for a while before you try on solid ground.
But my biggest problem when I started was I was afraid I was going to hurt myself.
You just gotta commit to it, because if you are hesitant at all, then yes, you are gonna be in some hurt.

Alternatively:
Attempt in a location in which half of your body can lean upon a sturdy, relatively flat parallel surface.

I can.

THIS.
I did capoiera for a while...
And one day I decided i was gonna backflip..
Luckily I live on an island and there are beaches all around...
So i just went to the beach...
And started trying...
Trick is really in two things...
firstly COMMIT!!!
Can't stress this enough...
Go ALL the way.. do NOT hesitate...
Secondly...
Its all in the arms...
I probably didn't have the best form but i was able to get it down packed by just bending my knees while swinging my arms back...
Then Swing my arms forward really fast...
And spring straight up in the air...
As you are rising..
Bring your knees up to your chest..
(you can grab with your hands if you want) ..
Then almost as soon as you get your legs there..
Start stretching them out to prepare for the land..
Its really pretty easy...
After that one day on the beach..
I was able to do backflips with ease anywhere...
And this is coming from someone who can't do backhand springs...
OR forward flips (summersaults)...
|
 |
|
I can't. :(
|
 |
I faceplanted myself in the mattress.
Fortunately I didn't break my neck :(

The back handspring and backflip kept me from being a great gymnast as a young boy.
I was flexible as hell, but there was something about the concept of going backwards that I was never able to figure out.
I could do front flips and front handsprings like crazy, but I could only do a back hand spring on the incline mat.
Then I got frustrated and quit after 3 years.

Thanks for the tips guys.
Been watching a few youtube videos and will hopefully get the balls to try it soon.
Is the chance of hurting your head/neck pretty minimal?
I mean if you don't quite go all the way, you'll come down on your front/arms, right?

I wish I was agile/brave enough to do this.

Yeah, the chance is pretty minimal, although when I was trying to learn it I landed on my upper back.
Do not bail out mid-turn, commit to it!
