Microsoft Enlists Jerry Seinfeld in Ad War Against Apple - NeoGAF
This should be interesting:
Quote: : Microsoft Corp., weary of being cast as a stodgy oldster by Apple Inc.'s advertising, is turning for help to Jerry Seinfeld.
The software giant's new $300 million advertising campaign, devised by a newly hired ad agency, has been closely guarded.
But Mr. Seinfeld will be one of the key celebrity pitchmen, say people close to the situation.
He will appear with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates in ads and receive about $10 million for the work, they say.
The new ad effort is expected to use some variation of the slogan "Windows, Not Walls," according to several people familiar with the matter.
Those people say the point is to stress breaking down barriers that prevent people and ideas from connecting.
The campaign, said to debut Sept.
4, is one of the largest in the company's history.
The attempted image overhaul comes as Microsoft executives privately acknowledge that Windows the company's most important brand has grown stale and has been battered by Apple's "Mac vs.
PC" ads. Those ads, created by Omnicom Group Inc.'s TBWA/Chiat/Day, feature a nerdy PC guy getting upstaged by a hip Mac counterpart.
Microsoft's immediate goal is to reverse the negative public perception of Windows Vista, the latest version of the company's personal-computer operating system.
Windows is Microsoft's largest generator of profit and revenue, accounting for 28% of the company's revenue of $60.4 billion in the year ended June 30.
The software has sold well, and Microsoft retains an overwhelming share of the market for operating system software over Apple.
But Apple's computer sales have been rising, and Vista is dogged by the notion that it has technical shortcomings and is hard to use.
Apple's latest Mac vs.
PC ads take swipes at Vista.
Microsoft says early problems with Vista have been largely alleviated.

If I was wanting to look cool and youthful I wouldn't hire an aging comic to soften my image.

They're probably gonna try and say age isn't a problem or w/e.
Should've hired john Mccain to make fun of Apple for being popular with the cool kids.
|
 |
|
Weird!
Well... I'm looking forward to it, just for a dose of the sein.
|
 |
|
This is good as long as they aren't as combative as Apple ads.

sure it is.
They are afraid Windows has become stale, old and passe.
But I don't have a marketing degree and maybe having Jerry say some unfunny stuff is what needs to be done.

Youths don't pay for Vista, no point appealing to them.

I look forward to seeing what Microsoft has spend hundreds of millions of dollars on, as I try to scrape together a couple of hundred to upgrade my PC enough to run their latest OS efficiently.

They should have just gotten Dane Cook.
He's fresh and edgy but still incredibly annoying

Maybe this the start of the new campaign talked about here

Overrated comedian, overrated product

Ten Million Dollars?
I'm young!
I can stand next to Bill Gates!
I can look hip!
|
 |
|
Dunno why I never liked MS
|
 |
They aren't trying to look youthful.
Regardless of what that article says, the PC vs.
Mac campaign has about 1% to do with this.
The other 99% is the fact that most regular users (not just geeks like us) think Vista sucks due to the shittiest software launch in history.

Agreed.
The "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" Ads have very little to do with this.
MS is trying desperately to salvage the image of Vista with the common user, who have heard mostly bad things about the OS, right or wrong.

"So what's the deal with Macintoshes?"

Yea you are probably right.
I have Vista on my laptop and ever since SP1 alot of the problems I had with it have been fixed but everyone I know seems to think Vista is worst than Windows 3.1!

That's what I don't get, the average user will just be forced to buy Vista when they buy a new PC, and after a few hours the FUD should just wash away.

That's what happened with me.
But then it was replaced with anger and frustration a month later.

Right.
Vista has gotten such a bad rap, that people who have never used it, nor really know that much about computers and technology, are bashing on it.

Isn't Seinfeld actually a pretty big Mac user?
I think that's the reason he always had one on his desk back on the television show.

The problem is that a lot of people are moving over to Macs instead of buying new PCs.
But even then, it's a small percentage of the overall market.
Where MS really needs to save itself is with businesses.
They are the ones that at the moment have no desire to upgrade.
Many are simply waiting for the next version because a lot of the software they use isn't fully compatible with Vista and/or the OS offers no advantage to spend the money.

I'd imagine it's more like 20% to do with this at the very least.
Apple is their competition, of course their ads criticizing Vista are a factor in MS trying to create a better image for Vista.

I always assume that's just standard issue set dressing.
Macs are almost always used on TV shows.
Oh, and here's Seinfeld's best TV commercial of all time: Seinfeld and Superman, just shooting the shit

I could have sworn that I read somewhere that he was a big Mac user.
The computer was upgraded several times over the course of the show, and at one point included the 25th Anniversary Mac.

I'll give you a hint.
One of them is spelled "McIntosh."

Well we can argue made-up percentages all we want to.
The point is that MS isn't trying to counter Apple with a "hey guys, we're cool and hip too" ad campaign.
|
 |
I'm very curious to see what the Crispin agency comes up with for MS.
They have created some of the funniest stuff in advertising over the past few years.
V-dub commercials, King ads and Subservient Chicken for Burger King among others.

Now you got me wanting to review all the episodes to find that one.

Ironically Jerry Seinfeld had a mac on his show.
|
 |
|
Sooo... we take the king ads and photoshop the vista logo over them?
|

Sorry!
Meant to say 20th Anniversary Mac.
But it's a very distinctive design, and can clearly be spotted on Jerry's desk in many of the later episodes.

Apple to counter with Shia Leboof.
Double trouble for Microsoft.
Drew Carrey gets called in to support Seinfeld.

Microsoft wins the commercial battle now.
Mac kid will need to find a new career.

Bahahaha Suck it Apple!

Seinfeld appeared with Superman before.
Now he's appearing with Bill Gates?
...I'm conflicted!
:(

I don't care about the "Mac kid." It's all about John Hodgman for me, and I'm a PC user.

The ads are created on a Mac.

Why bother stepping down to that level?
They already practically own the market.

Stepping down to what level?
We haven't seen these commercials yet.
They are likely to not be anything like the Mac ads and would be willing to bet they won't even mention the Mac.
This is more of a "Hey!
Don't believe everything you hear about Vista!" kind of thing.
|

True. But if it's just some spin-off of the childishness that is the Mac vs.
PC commericals...ugh.

I really doubt it'll be anything like those at all.
Like I said, I'll be shocked if they even mention a Mac.
This article makes it sound like they're going to be competing ads, but I highly doubt that.
