Evening Classes, Adult Education, Further Learning, Night Courses information in Ireland!

Hi Miriam. I am thinking of undertaking a Bachelor of Arts through Oscail.ie.

With this Degree am I eligible to study a post grad course?

Such as career guidance or teaching.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Mary. I don't see why you should not be able to do a postgraduate course but just be sure that the subjects you choose to take in your degree will be suitable for teaching purposes.

The Oscail degree has the same status as the degrees from the recognised universities that are listed on the site.

It would be advisable to check with the Teachers' Registration Council in the Department of Education and Science (090-6483824) to see if the subjects on offer for this year would be recognised for teaching in second level schools.

Not all of them are taught in second level schools so your choice could be limited enough.

If so, then you could apply to do the H.DipEd when you have your degree.

That would be full-time though and most of the Career Guidance courses would prefer that people have some teaching experience under their belts before they do it.

Hope that helps. Miriam.

Hi Miriam i wanted to know where i could do an evening/weekend part time arts course where i could study a range of subjects like music, philosophy, litterature, French etc... I would only want to study 3 subjects max. What careers could i get from this besides teaching.

Hi Kerrie. The only college offering a BA in the evenings is Dublin Business School.

If you go to www.dbs.ie for the information.

You could also do a BA by Distance Learning with Oscail but the subject choice is more limited.

Check it out at www.oscail.ie.

The Open University also has degrees on offer so go to www3.open.ac.uk/near-you/ireland you will get the details.

Miriam

Hi again Miriam Well i already knew about DBS, they do not do music or french and neither does ollscoil.

I will check out the open university though.

Do UCD not do a part time BA for mature students?

I thought they did i just wasn't able to find out what subjects they offer.

Hi again, Kerrie.

The subjects that are on offer are very limited really but the DBS course did include Philosophy and Literature which you had mentioned in your query.

Music and Popular Culture are also covered in first year.

I realise that you would not have a degree in music at the end of it, but at least it is in there somewhere.

I do not think it will be possible to get a degree in music part-time.

If you really want to study music on a part-time basis, contact the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama.

You will find the information about the part-time tuition at www.dit.ie/DIT/study/parttime2007/programmes/a001.html.

The Royal Irish Academy of Music (www.riam.ie) also have part-time tuition available.

UCD have no information available at the moment about their Evening BA as they are reorganising it so just keep an eye on their website (www.ucd.ie) and the papers as they would advertise it if it is going to be on offer this autumn.

I have been trying to get someone inn UCD to tell me what at what stage the developments are, but failed today so I have left my number for someone to contact me.

I will put another posting up if I hear back from them.

I notice that Music is included as one of the subjects on offer with the OU but if you have any questions about their BA, please direct them directly to the OU people at (01) 678 5399 which is the Enquiry and Advice Service in Dublin.

You were asking what careers you could enter with a BA?

Well, if you are considering teaching at secondary level as one of them, please check with the Teaching Council (www.teachingcouncil.ie) about whether your degree from the OU (if that is what you choose) or any other one you may be considering, would be recognised for teaching at post-primary level here.

I always recommend to BA students, to consider getting some individual professional career guidance when they are starting their final year to see which career direction are they going to follow.

You will be amazed how different your ideas may be after all those years of studying.

Postgraduate study is usually required to focus you when you have finished your BA.

You could do many things such as Law, Journalism, PR, Marketing, Business, Computers, Accountancy, Librarian, Publishing, Media related careers etc.but the beauty of doing an Arts degree is that you do not have to decide now.

The only time the actual subjects chosen would make a difference would be if you wanted to teach.

Good luck! Miriam

Thanks for all your help Mriiam.

One last question about the OU, are there actual classes in Dublin or do i do it all at home?

I would like the college atmosphere as well as getting the qualification in something.

I have requested a brochure from the OU, they do a course called Introduction to Humanities which i might be interested in.

Hi again, Kerrie.

You had better ask the OU people in Dublin about that.

I imagine there probably would be tutorials but I am not sure.

Miriam
