hibernian a little lost a little lost a little lost a little lost a little lost a little lost - Guidance advice, Guidance Message Forums, the National Guidance Forum at www.nightcourses.com

I just graduated from my arts degree and have recently decided to carry on my studies in the area of primary school teaching.

However, while researching the different ways to do this I am getting quite lost with so many different options.

I was wondering what are peoples opinions on the best way to go about it whether it be online, in Ireland or abroad.

Any information would be helpful.

Hi Derek. The quickest route to qualifying as a Primary Teacher is for you to do the Graduate Diploma in Primary Education (18 months).

It can be done full-time in one of the Teacher Training Colleges or online with Hibernian College (www.hiberniacollege.net).

You would have to have got C3 in higher Irish in your Leaving (or have passed 1st year Arts exam in Irish) and also would have to meet the minimum grades in English and Maths.

If you don't have the HC3 in Irish or 1st Arts, you could qualify in the UK (See www.prospects.ac.uk) and then come back and try and get a job here.

You would be on probation and given five years to meet the Irish requirement.

Special classes are run in various Teachers' Centres around the country.

It would be advisable to get some teaching experience in the UK before coming back if you qualify over there.

You would need to cost the various options also if considering going to the UK.

Hope that helps. Miriam.

I finish my arts degree in the coming may and want to train to become a Primary School teacher.

I have some information on colleges here in Ireland and in the UK but the hibernian course is never really mentioned and i was wondering if anyone thought that it was worthwhile or any information about it. thanks Emma

Hi Emma. The Hibernia College conversion postgraduate course is approved by HETAC the Higher Education Training Awards Council and recognised by the Department of Education and Science.

I have heard through the grapevine that its graduates are highly thought of.

Are there any Hibernia College graduates out there who can give some feedback on the course?

Miriam.

Also looking for info on the hibernia course.

Is it possible to hold down a full time job while doing it?

Any info on the interview would also be much appreciated as I have mine this month!thanks

Hi Orchid. If you go to www.hiberniacollege.com you will get most of the answers to your questions especially the one about holding down a full-time job while doing it.

You should also have a look at www.educationposts.ie in the Primary Level/Employees' Area and you will see "Message Board".

Go to it as there are some postings there about the interview and also a lot of very interesting other subjects.

Miriam.

Thanks a mil!
