move partition out of extended partition? - The PC Guide Discussion Forums

I have a HDD with a primary partition first (with an OS in it) followed by an extended partition.

The primary partition is running out of room.

The extended partition has freespace in it.

How do I get the freespace area out of the extended partition so I can resize the primary partition.

There are three partitions before the start of the extended partition. Do I slide the three patitions into the freespace area so the freespace is at the start of the extended partition? This is a multi boot system using Bing.

If you have three primaries and an extended with unallocated space then you will have to do a bit of shuffling alright.

But basically the operations are:Run chkdsk (optional) partic on the 1st primary since it will be resized.BACK-UP ANY MISSION CRITICAL DATA (optional).Move/slide all the logicals to the end of the extended one by one.Resize the extended so it has no unallocated space within it.Move/slide the 3rd primary up to the extended.Move/slide the 2rd primary up to the 3rd primary.Resize the 1st primary.Alternatively get a second HDD and copy the first primary to it and resize it there.

Thanks for the quick answer Paul.

I think we are on the same track with the resizing/moving.

I have a question on the 2nd alternative though.

After movng the first primary to another HDD, would I then leave it on the new HDD?

If yes, then I understand that too. Thanks

You could move it, period, and just use it as the boot partition on its own or you could use it with two drives in the system and get it to continue accessing the other partitions on the current drive.

Nothing is written in stone but you might need to change the BIOS boot order, etc, etc.

Got ya,.. thanks
