Nice article. we've all been thinking it, and it was a matter of time of when someone made an article about it.
san andreas was only banned because it had sex in it.
Not the fact that you're a foul mouthed cop killer, who mows down millions of people in the lifetime of the game.
what about the countless war games?
If thats not sending the wrong images to kids, then i dont know what is.

Great article. I agree entirely.
We should try to get rid of RC entirely.
I don't see how it can be justified in today's society.
|
 |
|
^ i don't know about a complete removal of RC, there are things that (imo) should never see the light of day (postal 2 springs immediately to mind, and there are other media that are probably just as warranted), but a review of the ratings and the enforcement is needed.
how many more places can we get to say the same thing?
|
 |
Who exactly are we protecting with an RC rating?
It's not like R18+ material can be obtained unless it is solicited.
Just because some things are in bad taste or offensive, it shouldn't mean those who want to watch them, can't.
|
 |
|
^ if we had a feasible X-rated system in Australia (the whole of Australia, not just the territories), then i'd agree with you, but until such a time as we have one, i think there are some things that aren't covered by the R-rating.
that's not to say i agree with all the RCed items out there, that movie that Margaret Pomeranz showed a few years for example should have been passed as an R, but others, like Bais Moi, are too strong for an R-rating, but would be suitable for an X-rating (quality of film notwithstanding, yes i've seen it, it was rubbish).

Nuts to compromising
Postal 2?
Man i have always wanted to play that.
Honestly games like GTA arent even worthy of an R rating.
That was honestly the most retarded thing ever, it wasnt even in the game.
Regardless of that fact a game like GTA doesnt encourage you ( or even have a tutorial) that shows you how to have sex with prositutes, let alone to pick them up so you can **** them up, and rob them.
How exactly is that encouring people to hurt sex workers?
I mean if it is show me the movie that tells the inspirational story of a sex worker(duece bigalo not withstanding) It's god damn free roaming game, that means its an idea the gamer has to come up with.
I mean if you give a 10 year old a creative writing exercise and they write about mudering their parents, you dont ban kids from writing you get that kid checked out.
Kingpin i would probably agree is , and postal 2 is, but even then i dont think they should be Restricted.
I mean age is such a stupid way to determine if someone is mature enough to play these games.
Still it is the only system we have.
I think it's sad that parents think they have raised kids that will suddenly go out and start chopping people up because they play mortal kombat alot.
Actually just thinking about games diversity, how come we dont have any games in the comedy general (enter the matrix gameplay excluded).
I mean we have drama, action, adventure.
Where are the true comedic games ( i mean there is Stubbs the Zombie, and others but why do they feel so second rate).
Why cant they hire Rick Gervais to write the script for an Office management game(this time i get to play the dick head).
Where are all the long term studies to prove our point (do i need to fund them my self).
**** it give me 15 minutes with excel and ill have you a 10,000 gamer and non gamer study that asked each a series of 30 questions(stolen from iqtest.com) that proves it doesnt increase crime.
I feel like we are living in Minorty Report where the only precrime they can predict springs from video games.
Finally let me get back to the point as each game should be on a game by game basis.
Shouldnt there be some accountablity of these people to prove how this promotes criminal acts (more so than the fact contains a single criminal act, because they arent complaining about the street fighting).
I mean they will let Alan Jones of 2AW or whatever the fack it is go on the radio and call an entire race inbreeder and worse, yet that seems to be covered by freedom of speech.
They get to show riots on tv news unedited, yet i cant play cartoon stick figure that sprays a virtual wall, less like spray painting than the windows paint programs spray can.
Why dont they ban that App.
Honestly i dont care, because if i really cared about gaming i wouldnt live in Australia.

Dick Cheney’s hunting gaffe.
Duck Hunt was to blame for that.
Hell, just delay a release by a few weeks (Xbox 360 anyone?) and we gamers are up in arms, or at the very least, foaming at the mouth with distress.
Some people just don't understand.
It's not having a game banned that makes gamers go nuts, it's the people behind the banning for only seeing one side of the spectrum.

First of all, I liked Baise Moi.
Really liked it. Yes, it was gratuitous and over the top but it was realistic.
Realistic in the sense that after what those girls went through, whose to say they wouldn't give up on the world and go on a murder spree?
I could see it. Then again, I like watching movies, reading books and listening to music that deals with real people overcoming (or losing everything to) extreme situations.
Life is short, I'm trying to take in the totality of human experience.
Back on topic then...
I definitely believe that the whole RC thing should be demolished and that there should be a stricter rating system.
I'm cool with an X rating for the real 'out there' stuff.
Let a person make their own decisions.
Personally I was looking forward to this game, for two reasons.
Firstly, Jet Grind Radio was heaps of fun so we all know graf games can work.
Secondly, it's the closest thing to a 'Hip Hop' video game in a long time (quiet Obs).
I was willing to give it a shot based on those two things alone.
Actually, I'm still gonna give it a shot, but that's another story.
And get the name right - it's Marc Ecko.
Marc, with a C.

Your post was all great but that sentence in particular made my night.
I laughed, and then I cringed when I realised how right you are.
Thank you, and welcome.

Heh, i think you're the first person i know to say they liked Baise Moi (with and e, or without an e?
Meh), and that's cool, just a personal thing i guess, maybe it wasn't clear, but i was talking on the production level, not the narrative level.
It was a confronting film, i just didn't think it was made well.
Personally i thought Irreversable did a much better job at telling a similar story (plus, Monica Bellucci ).
regardless though, the point i was trying to make was that it was (imo) too strong for an R-rating, but would fit in an X-rating easily, then we'd have the luxury of seeing it, if we desired, rather than having it banned outright, like it is currently.
as an aside, i worked in a cinema when this film was showing, it was disgusting having to clean up after the screenings, especially during the midday showing.
I'll just say this: tissues.
Yes, we were issued rubber-gloves.

As well as saying a few things over in The Sydney Morning Herald, Marc Ecko also spoke on Triple J's Hack.

San Andreas was banned because the sexual content wasn't shown to the OFLC, not because of the actual content.
If it was the content that caused the banning then something like Fahrenheit would have also received a banning.
The sex scene in that is way more involving than what can be found with a nice cup of hot coffee...
Nice article though, I hope to see more of these in the future.
