Fantasy Craft - Soldier - Penciljack Forum
One of about 50 or so illustrations I did over the last six months for the upcoming tabletop RPG Fantasy Craft.
I think this one was drawn around November or December of last year (the "class" illustrations were the earliest ones)
All of the illustrations were drawn in Manga Studio EX using an Intuos 9x12 lap tablet.
This was the first time I'd done such a large body of work in EX, and I think I've really expanded the repertoire a bit.
For one thing, I'm MUCH more inclined to use shadows and solid blacks, because in digital it's much easier and the consequences less dire if you overdo it.
I've also learned to "carve away" at solid black (something hard to do with real ink), where you refine the edges of a silhouette or incorporate detail and negative space after you've done the fill.
And of course, I draw with white now almost as much as black.
So anyhow, there should be a lot of these that I can post as the book nears publication, and since it's the big illustration project I've been on for half a year (as opposed to my animation work, which I'm rarely able to share) I thought you guys might dig it.
It's not sequential comics, but I do try to tell a little story when I can even in a single image.
I look forward to the crits, as this level of ink is a bit of new territory for me (my name notwithstanding).

Nice job man
I think the only critique I have for you, is that with all the spot shadows throughout the piece, the lack of attention to the hair stands out.
The shield is crazy cool!

I second the awesomeness of the shield.
I've recently begun using Manga Studio and I dig drawing with the white as well.

Me three - that shield is awesome.
It was my first thought when I looked at the piece.
Manga Studio?
I'll have to look that up.

You need to get that shield idea copyrighted or something, its insanely cool!

Everybody loves that shield!
The description called for the soldier to have "arranged the blood and bones of his victims across his shield and armor to form morbid crests mocking those of more “civilized” species."
Which, in retrospect, isn't really what I did at all.
But the client is happy, so I guess I win.
Manga Studio is totally my choice for an ink drawing platform.
I still use Photoshop extensively, but for line work I love Manga Studio...
It does an excellent job of simulating brushes and pens, something that PS require a good deal of tweaking to come close to.
Plus I work in 600dpi bitmaps, which run fast but come out crisp (as there are no aliased lines).
PS can do it too, but MS makes it much easier and more convenient.

Awesome!
and great details!
The shield of course, but also the chain armor...
I really like it!

Manga Studio has really given your more recent work this nice graphic quality that wasn't there before - I think it's all the solid blacks and negative space.
Either way, it works really well, and this is a perfect example.

The shield is great!

Nice blacks and that shield does rock!
Wow, i didn't know Manga Studio was so versatile!
I have it, i think i will go mess with it some then.
